Get in

[edit | edit source]

If you are arriving in Hamburg by plane, you'll most likely land at Hamburg Airport, some 8 km north of downtown Hamburg. The airport is connected to Hamburg's urban rail network by the S1 line.

Several S- and U-bahn lines go up to northern Hamburg, although the southern part of the area this guide comprises are accessible by foot from central Hamburg and St. Georg. The AKN railway connects the northwestern parts of the city directly to Altona.

Eppendorf

[edit | edit source]

53.59249.98858 Eppendorf is the oldest "Dorf" (town) of Hamburg. In Eppendorf you will find a lot of well cared-for 19th-century houses making the quarter an eye-catcher.

As a good alternative to the city centre you will find in Eppendorf a nice collection of shops - a lot of them very individual. Focus is on clothes and shoes.

  • Supper Club, Isekai 13 (on the Isebek Canal an easy walk from Eppendorfer Buam or Klosterstern U stations). Supper Club's name doesn't give you any clues about this business. It hires canoes and all manner of other unpowered water craft by the hour. When you have finished paddling you can eat at the outdoor cafe if you wish. A 2 hour paddle using one of their suggested itineraries through small canals and lakes takes you past some of Hamburg's most elegant homes, You will definitely want to move there after this paddle (whether you have the money to buy a mansion in northern Hamburg is beyond the scope of this entry)!
The canoe hire side of the operation only takes cash and requires a passport or photo ID to be left with them as security.
The ferries from the city centre to Winterhuder Fahrhaus offer great views of the Alster lakes but the Supper Club paddle is superior so you could probably skip the ferry trip if you plan to do the paddle.
  • 53.597210.00895 Hamburg Planetarium (in a former water tower in the Stadtpark). Features multiple visual shows a day, and an observation deck. 12 EUR (adult). Hamburg Planetarium on Wikipedia Hamburg Planetarium (Q961913) on Wikidata OSM directions

Northern Hamburg does not provide the shopping opportunities that the city centre or St. Pauli do. Corner shops provide all the necessities with a few regular specialty shops in between, and there are some suburban shopping centres, designed for car-driving customers, such as the 53.60019.97441 Nedderfeld Center.

  • 53.58059.98052 Isemarkt. Every Tuesday and Friday 08:00-14:00. Europe's longest open market, under the U3 subway driveway between Hoheluftbrücke and Eppendorfer Baum between the two lanes of the Isestraße. OSM directions
