Haryana

Haryana on map of India

Haryana (Hindi: हरियाणा Hariyāṇā, Punjabi: ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ) is a state in northwestern India, southeast of Punjab. Often overlooked by the travellers to northern India, Haryana is home to various historical and religious sites. Surrounding the city of Delhi by three sides, the state also dominates the city's suburban and commercial sprawl, including the bustling tech hub of Gurugram.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

The modern state of Haryana was formed in 1966 after a long-term tussle between the Punjabi-speaking and Hindi-speaking areas of the Indian state of Punjab. The city Chandigarh also serves as the capital of Haryana since then.

As in almost all of the Plains, Hindi is the mother tongue of Haryana, although pockets of Punjabi speakers are also found, mostly around Chandigarh. Although the Hindi dialect spoken in Faridabad and Gurugram is nothing different from that of Delhi, the state has its own dialect of Hindi, called Haryanvi (हरियाणवी Hariyāṇvī).
