History

[edit | edit source]

Human activity in the Huangshi area dates back to the Neolithic period. During the Qin and Han dynasties, the region was part of Donglai Commandery. The nearby Daye area has a long history of copper and iron mining.

On May 15, 1949, both Huangshi and Daye came under the control of the People's Liberation Army. On June 12, 1949, the Office of the Special Commissioner for the Shihuiyao Industrial Zone was established under the Wuhan Military Control Committee. On September 29 of the same year, the People's Government of the Daye Industrial and Mining Special Zone was established in Huangshi, Tieshan, and other townships.

Huangshi developed as an industrial city in the 20th century, with mining, steel, and cement production forming the base of its economy. In recent decades, the city has worked to diversify its economy and develop tourism around its industrial heritage.

Get around

[edit | edit source]
Map
Map of Huangshi

By bus

[edit | edit source]

Huangshi has a widespread public bus network. Fares are inexpensive, typically ranging from ¥1 to ¥2. You can pay with cash, or use mobile payment apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay. Buses are the most economical way to travel, though they can be crowded during morning and evening rush hours.

By taxi

[edit | edit source]

Taxis are readily available in the urban areas. The flagfall fare starts at around ¥7 to ¥8. For foreign visitors, using ride-hailing apps like Didi is highly recommended. It provides transparent pricing, avoids the need for speaking Chinese, and eliminates the risk of being overcharged.

By ferry

[edit | edit source]

Because Huangshi is located along the Yangtze River, local ferries provide a practical and highly scenic way to cross between the northern and southern banks. The main passenger ferry terminals are located near the city center (such as the Huangshi Ferry Terminal) and connect to areas like Huanggang and the opposite bank. The crossing is very cheap (usually just a few RMB) and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. For travelers, taking the ferry is highly recommended not just for transportation, but also as a great way to enjoy the river breeze and get a panoramic view of the city's skyline and the Yangtze River Bridge.

By bicycle

[edit | edit source]

Shared bicycles are widely available in Huangshi's urban areas. You can unlock them using Alipay or WeChat. Cycling is a great way to explore the flat areas around Cihu Lake. However, be cautious on main roads as bike lanes are limited.

On foot

[edit | edit source]

Walking is suitable for exploring specific areas, such as the Tuanchengshan area or the Cihu Lake promenade. However, the city is quite spread out, and walking between major districts is not recommended. Pedestrian infrastructure is good, but always be cautious when crossing busy roads.

Accommodation options in Huangshi span from budget local motels and national‑chain economy hotels up to full‑service five‑star luxury properties. Basic motels generally cost ¥80‑160 per night, providing private bathrooms and Wi‑Fi, though cleanliness standards and service quality can vary considerably. Mid‑tier business‑chain hotels are widely spread across downtown districts and close to Huangshi North Railway Station, which is the main high‑speed rail gateway to the city.
