Eastern Suburbs
The Eastern Suburbs consists of Ataşehir, Maltepe, Kartal, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy, Sancaktepe, Pendik and Tuzla districts.
Understand
[edit]
These districts, located on Istanbul's Asian side, share a common history of transformation from rural lands and agricultural settlements into rapidly urbanized areas. Historically, these regions were mostly quiet villages, with settlements dating back to ancient times, including Greek and Roman influences in areas like Kartal, Pendik and Tuzla.
The late 20th century marked a period of rapid development across these districts, with the establishment of industrial zones, commercial hubs, and large residential areas. Ataşehir, Çekmeköy, and Ümraniye became more prominent with their modern infrastructure and growing populations. Kartal and Pendik, with their coastal locations, saw significant urban growth and industrialization, particularly in port and transportation sectors. Tuzla, known for its historical salt flats and shipyards, has evolved into a center for tourism and residential life, alongside its industrial sectors. Whilst Maltepe essentially became a quasi-extension of Kadıköy, embracing a similar vibe.
Today, these districts represent a blend of modern urban living, commercial growth, and proximity to nature, while still reflecting the historical and cultural layers that shaped them.

See main Istanbul page for overall transportation within the city.
- 1 Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW IATA) (20 km (12 mi) east of Kadıköy). This airport has many domestic and international flights and is much more convenient for this side of the city, and less congested. Metro line M4 runs to Kadıköy on the Asian side, where you can continue to the European side by ferry or transfer to the Marmaray train at Ayrılık Çeşmesi. There are also various direct bus services, but travel times can be erratic due to traffic.
- 2 Pendik Train Station (Pendik Tren İstasyonu). Istanbul's terminus for high speed trains is in Söğütlüçeşme, near the disused historic terminus of Haydarpaşa but Pendik serves as a major stop along the route. Also provides transfer for suburban Marmaray line.
- 3 Dudullu Terminal. Second main bus terminal of the Asian side of the city.
- 4 Pendik Pier (Pendik İskelesi), Batı, İspark No 12. Fast ferries from towns along the southern coast of the Marmara Sea, such as Yalova or Bandırma, have direct lines to Pendik.

- M8 connects these two with each other and with Marmaray at Bostancı.
- M12 runs from Göztepe northbound to Ümraniye (active in Q4 25).
- Marmaray: the cross-city suburban train line (B1), picks up at Üsküdar (transfer to M5), Ayrılıkçeşme (transfer to M4; 1.6 km north of the Kadıköy waterfront), and Söğütlüçeşme (transfer to Metrobüs; 1.7 km east of the Kadıköy waterfront) and serves the neighbourhoods and suburbs on the Marmara coast, as far east as Gebze.
Main Roads:
- D100 motorway (a.k.a. E5) and 0-4 (TEM) highway.
- The causeway (Sahil Yolu), which follows the Marmara coast.
- Bağdat Street, the road colloquially known as Minibüs Yolu.
By bicycle: there are some 20 km of marked bicycle lanes along the causeway, starting from a few km east of Kadıköy, passing by eventually reaching the eastern suburbs of the city. The bike lane is well-maintained but watch out for pedestrians which will be plenty during nice weathers.
