Jining (Inner Mongolia)

Jining (集宁; Jíníng) is a district of 377,000 people (2011) in Inner Mongolia at the southern foot of Huitengliang in the Yinshan Mountains. It is the main urban area of Ulanqab Prefecture. Jining is a regional centre for commerce, industry, education and transportation. It is also a useful base for visiting historic sites in southwestern Shandong.

Jining was an independent city before it became a district of Ulanqab Prefecture. Jining District is an urban district and the administrative seat of Ulanqab City in south-central Inner Mongolia, China. Home to roughly 377,000 people, it functions as a key regional transportation and commercial hub nestled in the southern foothills of the Yinshan Mountains. As of 2011, it had a population of roughly 377,100, including members of the Mongol, Hui, Manchu, Daur, Tibetan, Uyghur, Hmong, and Yi national minorities.

Jining is a railway hub; trains come in from Erenhot to the north, Hohhot and Baotou to the west, and the mining city Datong to the south. The Trans-Mongolian branch of the Trans-Siberian railway passes through the city.
