Understand
[edit | edit source]
Kalix is a small coastal town in Norrbotten County, at the mouth of the Kalix River on the Gulf of Bothnia. About 7,000 people live in the town and some 16,000 in the whole municipality. The Finnish name is Kainuu (Meänkieli: Kainus), and the name itself is thought to come from a Sami word meaning "cold river".
The town is best known for Kalix löjrom (vendace roe), Sweden's first food product with a protected designation of origin. Offshore lies an archipelago of nearly 800 islands. Kalix Church, from the early 15th century, is the northernmost medieval church in Sweden. During the Second World War and the Cold War the area was the centre of the Kalix Line, a defensive line. Today the town is also known for bandy.
