History

[edit | edit source]

Kamptee was established in 1821. The English name, as well as the Marathi name Kāmṭhi, is a corruption of the earlier name "Camp-T", so named for the cantonment's shape. Although the town quickly became a centre for trade, it later dwindled with the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century.
