Kanchipuram district is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The area comprising the present day Kancheepuram district was earlier a part of Chingleput district. The original Chingleput district was split in 1997 into form the present day Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. Kanchipuram district is one of the historically important areas of northern Tamil Nadu. The region was associated with the Pallava kingdom and later came under the influence of several South Indian dynasties.

The district is particularly famous for Kanchipuram, one of the traditional sacred cities of India. The city contains numerous Hindu temples representing both Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions.

Silk weaving is another important part of the area's identity. Kanchipuram silk sarees are traditionally handwoven and are widely known throughout India.

The nearest major airport is Chennai International Airport, approximately 60–70 km from Kanchipuram depending on the route.

Kanchipuram has a railway station with local and regional services. Trains connect the city with Chennai, Arakkonam, Tirupati and other destinations.

Tamil Nadu state buses connect Kanchipuram with Chennai, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Pondicherry and other towns.

Kanchipuram is about 70 km from Chennai. Road connections include routes towards Chennai, Vellore, Chengalpattu and Bangalore.
