Karystos

Karystos is a seaside town on the southern tip of Evvia, looking across the narrow strait toward the Greek mainland. It serves as the gateway to Mount Ochi, a rugged and windswept massif known for its ancient drakospita (“dragon houses”). The town’s small fortress and scattered ruins reflect its layered past, while its position makes it a natural stop for travellers arriving by ferry from Rafina.

The area has been inhabited since antiquity, later developing under Venetian and Ottoman rule.

The most common route is from Rafina (near Athens) to Marmari (about 1 hour). From Marmari, it’s a 15 km drive or bus/taxi ride to Karystos.

Drive from Athens via Chalkida (bridge to Evia) and continue south (approx. 3–4 hours total).

KTEL buses connect Athens to Karystos, often via Chalkida.

• 38.01279524.421821 Bourtzi Castle (guarding the harbour). A small Venetian-era tower, the town’s most recognisable landmark. It dates to the 13th century and once formed part of Karystos’ coastal defences.  (updated Jul 2026)
• 38.034724.431552 Castelo Rosso (perched above Karystos). A powerful 13th-century Frankish fortress built by Ravano dalle Carceri. Despite its name, it is constructed from grey-yellow stone and occupies a naturally defensive site with dramatic views over the bay. • Drakospita (Dragon Houses). Mysterious megalithic stone structures scattered across Mount Ochi, built from massive slabs without mortar. Their purpose remains debated, adding to their allure. (updated Jul 2026)

• Hike Mount Ochi. Explore trails leading to the summit and the drakospita. Conditions can be harsh; bring water and check weather.
