Understand

[edit | edit source]

Kisii is a town in southwestern Kenya and the capital of Kisii County. It is an important commercial, administrative and agricultural centre in the highlands of the former Nyanza region. The town is surrounded by intensively cultivated countryside and is particularly associated with tea, bananas, maize, dairy farming and other agricultural products. Kisii lies in a highland area with relatively fertile soils and a generally mild, wet climate. The surrounding countryside is densely settled and extensively cultivated, with farms occupying much of the available land.

Agriculture is central to the local economy. Smallholder farmers produce tea, bananas, maize, beans, vegetables and other crops, while dairy farming is also important. Kisii town functions as a major market and service centre for farmers from the surrounding counties.

The area is strongly associated with the Kisii people, also known as the Gusii. Ekegusii is widely spoken locally, while Swahili and English are used in education, business and government.

History

[edit | edit source]

The Kisii highlands have long been inhabited by the Gusii people. The modern town developed during the colonial period as an administrative and trading centre.

Kisii expanded after Kenya's independence as roads, education, health services and commercial activities developed. Its strategic position between western Kenya, the Lake Victoria region and the southern highlands contributed to its growth.

Today, Kisii serves as the principal urban centre for Kisii County and an important commercial hub for the wider Gusii highlands.
