Kondoa is a city the Dodoma region of Central Tanzania, and is best known as the gateway to the Kondoa Rock Art Sites, a group of prehistoric rock shelters containing paintings that form one of East Africa's most important archaeological and cultural landscapes.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Kondoa is the administrative centre of Kondoa District. Kondoa is located in the interior of central Tanzania, northwest of Dodoma. The town serves as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding rural communities, where agriculture and livestock keeping are important economic activities.
The surrounding landscape consists of hills, valleys, rocky outcrops and cultivated land. Kondoa is particularly significant because of the numerous rock-art sites found in the wider area. The Kondoa Rock Art Sites were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 in recognition of their outstanding cultural importance.
Swahili is widely spoken, while local languages are also used in surrounding communities. English may be understood in some government offices, hotels and tourism-related services.
History
[edit | edit source]The Kondoa area has evidence of human activity stretching back thousands of years. The numerous rock shelters in the surrounding hills contain paintings created by communities that lived in or passed through the region over a long period.
The paintings include representations of people, animals and geometric designs. Different styles and periods of rock art demonstrate the changing cultural traditions of the communities that occupied the area.
In more recent history, Kondoa developed as a local administrative and trading centre. Today, the town remains closely associated with the archaeological heritage found in the surrounding landscape.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Kondoa has a generally warm tropical climate influenced by its inland location and elevation. The area experiences a distinct rainy season and a longer dry season. The dry months can be hot during the day, while nights may be cooler. The rainy season transforms the surrounding countryside, making the landscape greener but sometimes affecting travel on smaller rural roads.
Get in
[edit | edit source]Buses to Kondoa run daily from Dodoma. The drive takes about four hours, in good weather. Buses to Dodoma leave Kondoa in the morning at about 6AM.
Get around
[edit | edit source]The town centre can be explored on foot. Local transport, including taxis and minibuses, is available for longer journeys. A vehicle and local guide are useful when visiting rock-art sites outside the town, as some are located in rural areas and may require travel on smaller roads or tracks.
