Get in
[edit | edit source]By plane
[edit | edit source]Calicut International Airport (CCJ), also known as Karipur Airport, is the main airport serving Kozhikode District. It is located approximately 23–30 km from Kozhikode city, depending on the route. Domestic flights connect Kozhikode with major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. International flights also connect the airport with destinations in the Middle East. Taxis and other road transport are available from the airport to Kozhikode city. The fare depends on the destination and type of vehicle, so confirm the price before departure or check a ride-booking service. 1 .
By train
[edit | edit source]Kozhikode Railway Station (CLT) is an important railway station on India's west coast. It has frequent connections with destinations such as Mangaluru, Kochi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram. For example, the journey from Kozhikode to Kannur covers approximately 89 km and takes about 1–2 hours, depending on the train. Indicative fares start at around ₹65–70 for an ordinary or second-class ticket, while reserved sleeper and air-conditioned tickets cost more. Prices vary by train, class and availability. 2 .
By bus
[edit | edit source]Kozhikode is well connected by road to other parts of Kerala and neighbouring states. Government buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private bus companies connect Kozhikode with destinations such as Kochi, Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore and Thiruvananthapuram. Both daytime and overnight services are available on many intercity routes. Ordinary buses are generally the cheapest option, while Fast Passenger, Super Fast and air-conditioned services charge higher fares. Within Kozhikode District, local buses connect Kozhikode city with towns such as Vadakara, Koyilandy, Feroke and other nearby destinations. Fares depend on distance and service type. Check the current fare at the bus station or with the operator. Major bus stations in Kozhikode include the KSRTC bus terminal on Mavoor Road, the Mofussil Bus Stand and Palayam Bus Stand .
By road
[edit | edit source]Kozhikode District is connected to other parts of Kerala and neighbouring states by national highways and regional roads.
- NH 66 runs along the western coast, connecting Kozhikode with Kannur, Kasaragod and destinations farther south .
- NH 766 connects Kozhikode with Wayanad and continues towards Mysuru and Bengaluru.
- Other regional roads connect Kozhikode with Malappuram, Palakkad and inland villages.
Travellers can reach the district by private car, rental vehicle, taxi or intercity bus. Journey times depend on traffic and road conditions. Roads leading into the Western Ghats can be winding, especially around the Thamarassery Ghat section towards Wayanad.
By taxi and auto-rickshaw
[edit | edit source]Taxis are available at the airport, railway station and major bus terminals. They are useful for direct journeys to destinations that are not conveniently served by public transport. Fares depend on distance, time of day and vehicle type; agree on the price before departure or use a booking service.
Auto-rickshaws are widely available for short journeys within Kozhikode city and nearby towns. They are particularly useful for reaching hotels, markets and attractions from railway stations or bus stops. Confirm the fare or ask for the meter to be used where applicable.
By ferry
[edit | edit source]Passenger ferry services operate in some waterways and backwater areas around Kozhikode. They can provide an inexpensive alternative for certain local journeys, depending on the route. Kozhikode, Beypore and Vadakara also have ports, but they should not be assumed to offer regular passenger boat connections to other destinations. Check locally for current ferry routes and operating times.
Get around
[edit | edit source]Autorickshaws are the popular option here because they charge only ₹15 per km. All taxis are also available. Buses charge ₹7 for three km. Minibuses are a little more popular because of their friendly attitude to the passengers but they are available only in the cities. Air-conditioned cars and jeeps are also available at ₹1,000 for one day's contract.
