Kpandai

Kpandai is the capital of Kpandai District in the eastern Oti River plain in the Volta Basin. It is a large farming and market town known as one of Ghana's biggest yam markets and for its mix of Konkomba, Nawuri, Bassari and Gonja communities.

Kpandai was historically a Nawuri settlement with Gonja influence, later heavily settled by Konkomba farmers from the north. It has seen Nawuri-Gonja-Konkomba land disputes in the past but is now a busy agricultural hub. It became a district capital in 2008.

Mixed — Nawuri (native), Konkomba (majority), Gonja, Bassari, Kotokoli, Ewe and Akan traders. Likpakpaal (Konkomba), Nawuri, Twi, Ewe, Hausa spoken. Christianity dominant, Islam and traditional religion present. Very traditional area.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Hot 30-39°C, harmattan.
• Rainy season (Apr-Oct): Single season, heavy July-Sep, Oti floods, earth roads bad.
• Best time: November-February and yam harvest Aug-Oct.

Large spread-out town. Central market and lorry station, district assembly on edge, roads to Nkanchina, Buya, and Ekumdipe to Lake Volta side.

• Private car: such as Go Transport, reaching Kpandai from Bimbilla, one may use an 1 hour 30 minutes and 45 minutes from Wulensi.
• Motorbike approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from Bimbilla, and 1 hour 30 minutes from Wulensi.
• Yellow yellow(tricycle): about 2 hours from Bimbilla and 1 hour 45 minutes from Wulensi to reach Kpandai.

• On foot: walking to nearby spots, the central area. Although it is advisable to cover yourself from the midday sun.

• Bicycle: Most people use bicycle as it is affordable and also faster than travelling on foot.

• Kpandai Yam Market. One of largest in Ghana. Huge mounds of yams in season, traders from Accra, Kumasi, Togo. Best Aug-Dec. Photos ask permission.

• Oti River at Buya / Ekumdipe. 20-30 min from town, river crossing, fishing canoes, floodplain views.

• Kpandai Central Market. Daily, peak Wednesdays.

With regards to tradition, the people of Kpandai celebrate:

• Hunter's Coded Sound: Nawuri hunters use a unique acoustic technique with two pieces of wood to mimic bird calls, passing silent messages back and forth during group hunts.
• Traditional dances: Communities celebrate milestones and festivals with energetic local performances like the Ngber dance.
• Shared community identity: Inter-ethnic social durbars and peace-building events are frequently held to reinforce unity among the diverse groups living in the district.
