Kunda

Kunda is a small town in North Estonia, on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. It is known for its cement industry, historic port, the Kunda River valley and archaeological finds associated with the prehistoric Kunda culture.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

Kunda developed into an industrial town in the late 19th century, when cement production began in the area. The Kunda River provided power for the industry, and a hydroelectric power station was established on the river in 1893.

The area is also important in Estonian prehistory. Finds from nearby Lammasmägi gave their name to the Kunda culture, an archaeological culture associated with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.

Kunda is part of Viru-Nigula Parish in Lääne-Viru County.
