Lakhisarai or Luckeesarai (लखीसराय Lakhīsarāy) is a pilgrimage site in the Magadha region of Bihar.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Lakhisarai is considered to be a pilgrimage site since the 8th century, when Pala emperor Narayana Pala started Shiva worship here. In the 12th century, a local ruler called Indradyumna built a Shiva temple here. It is said to be demolished since, with no remains of the temple.
In 1977, two boys Ashok and Gajanand discovered a large lingam (abstract representation of Shiva) beneath the ground. This prompted a construction of a new temple at the site, making it a modern pilgrimage site.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Ashokdham Temple, Rajauna Chowk. A temple complex with the Shiva temple at the centre, surrounded by three Parvati temples. Millions of pilgrims from different parts of India gather here during Shivaratri and offer Ganges water.
- 2 Shringri Rishi Dham. A nearby temple where devotees come here to get their children's head shaved after their wishes are fulfilled. The mountain waterfalls and ponds here enhance the beauty. The temple premises is situated in the root of hills. There is a hot water natural water spring where devotees takes divine bath. The whole area is surrounded by hills and water bodies.
