Livadia is in West Central Greece. Livadia is a working Greek town with a strong local identity, combining historical layers with a pleasant natural setting. The town's defining feature is the Herkyna River, which flows through a small wooded gorge (the Krya area), creating waterfalls, stone bridges, and shady paths—making it one of the most attractive urban river settings in mainland Greece.

[edit | edit source]Livadia sits in the region of Boeotia, about 130 km northwest of Athens. In antiquity it was known for the oracle of Trophonius, once one of the most famous prophetic sites in Greece.

- ~1.5–2 hr from Athens
- ~45 min from Delphi
- There are regular KTEL buses to Athens, Thessaloniki, Delphi, Thebes, Larissa and Lamia

[edit | edit source]- Scattered around town are older churches, fountains, and traces of Livadia’s medieval and Ottoman past. While not a major monument destination, the layered history adds depth to a stroll through the centre.
- 1 Livadeia Castle. Perched above Livadia, the medieval castle crowns Mount Agios Ilias, overlooking the deep gorge of the Herkyna River. Built in the 13th century and largely shaped during Catalan rule in the 14th century, it occupies a naturally fortified position with steep cliffs protecting most sides. Though partly ruined, sections of its walls, towers and gate structures survive, along with sweeping views across the Boeotian plain. The short uphill walk makes it a worthwhile stop when visiting the town.
- 2 Krya Springs & Herkyna River. The highlight of Livadia is the lush riverside park known as Krya. Here the Herkyna River cascades through small waterfalls beneath plane trees, with walking paths, old mills, and cafés built right beside the water. It’s especially pleasant in summer, when the shade and flowing water provide relief from the heat.
