Lushnja



Lushnja (definite form: Lushnjë) is a town and municipality in Coastal Albania, a former capital of Albania. The municipality's population is 63,135 as of the 2023 census.

Lushnjë had an important role following the independence of Albania. In January 1920, Lushnjë was a provisional capital of Albania and the site of the Congress of Lushnjë. Leaders of Albania assembled in the town and declared Tirana first a provisional and then the definitive capital of Albania.

By plane Lushnjë is reachable from Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza located in the capital, Tirana. There is no bus directly from the airport to Shijak, but you can take a cab. The airport is 83 km from Lushnjë.

By bus

Your first option is to travel by bus. If you are coming through Tirana, you have multiple private and public buses running between the two places. You can catch the bus to Lushnjë at Regional Bus Terminal - North and South Albania (Kashar) from 07:00 until 18:00.

By car

From Tirana, head west to Durrës and then south towards Vlora. Lushnjë is 85 km, 1 hr 19 min away.

From Durrës, head south towards Lushnjë, 53 km, 47 min away.

Lushnjë does not have a port, but the nearby town of Durrës does.
