Understand
[edit | edit source]Mahebourg is a historic coastal town in the Grand Port District of Mauritius. Located on the southeastern coast of the island, it is known for its waterfront, colonial heritage, nearby islands and connection to the early history of Mauritius. Mahebourg has a total population of about 16,000 people. It is one of the oldest settlements in Mauritius and remains an important local centre for the southeastern part of the island.
The town is located near Grand Port, a bay that played an important role in the maritime history of Mauritius. Mahebourg has a relaxed atmosphere with a mixture of traditional markets, colonial buildings, fishing activities and coastal scenery.
Unlike the busy resort areas of northern Mauritius, Mahebourg offers visitors a more authentic view of local life. The town is also a convenient base for exploring nearby attractions, including Blue Bay Marine Park and islands in the surrounding lagoon.
