Mahebourg

Mahebourg is a city in Mauritius.

Mahebourg is a historic coastal town in the Grand Port District of Mauritius. Located on the southeastern coast of the island, it is known for its waterfront, colonial heritage, nearby islands and connection to the early history of Mauritius. Mahebourg has a total population of about 16,000 people. It is one of the oldest settlements in Mauritius and remains an important local centre for the southeastern part of the island.

The town is located near Grand Port, a bay that played an important role in the maritime history of Mauritius. Mahebourg has a relaxed atmosphere with a mixture of traditional markets, colonial buildings, fishing activities and coastal scenery.

Unlike the busy resort areas of northern Mauritius, Mahebourg offers visitors a more authentic view of local life. The town is also a convenient base for exploring nearby attractions, including Blue Bay Marine Park and islands in the surrounding lagoon.

As a result of the remarkable work accomplished by the Mauritius Wildlife Fund, the island has become an international standard for the protection of natural resources and endangered species. A few of the world’s rarest birds, including the kestrel, can be seen there. You can also see the extremely rare Pink Pigeon, the Green Gecko Phelsuma and the Aldabra giant tortoise. Be sure to make a reservation in advance.

• Market of Mahebourg. It is held on every Mon. Nowhere can you better feel the heart and soul of Mauritius than in the market of Mahebourg. It offers besides the shopping of unique products to blend into the population's customs and habits. Stall of colourful tropical fruits and vegetables are found side by side with medicinal plants and spices. You can also find clothes and a special arts and crafts section. You can also buy fresh fish and prepare it in Mauritian style.
