Masinloc is a town of the province of Zambales in the Philippines.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Masinloc was founded by the Spanish in 1607 along an eponymous cove. It also has nominal jurisdiction over Scarborough Shoal (known locally as Panatag or Bajo de Masinloc Shoal), a reef 220 kilometres (140 mi) west of town in the South China Sea that has been occupied by China since 2012.

Masinloc lies along the Olongapo-Bugallon Road, the main thoroughfare in Zambales. It is accessible by bus from Metro Manila, with Victory Liner passing by the town as part of their infrequent daily trips to Santa Cruz further north. An alternative option is to switch to jeepneys or passenger vans in either Olongapo or the provincial capital, Iba.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Diocesan Shrine and Parish of San Andres (Masinloc Church), Santa Lucia Street, South Poblacion. Masinloc's main Roman Catholic church, built in the Baroque style during the Spanish era in 1713 using coral stone. It was declared a national cultural treasure by the Philippine government in 2001.
- 2 San Salvador Island. An island with extensive white sand beaches, a giant clam sanctuary and a thriving fishing community inside a marine reserve.
- 3 Bacala Guesthouse. A fishermen's shelter built on stilts atop a sandbar near San Salvador Island.
- 4 Panglit Island. An island containing mangroves and a 5 hectares (12 acres) offshore sea cucumber farm.
