[edit]Understand
[edit]The province's economy, once mainly based on the production of the famous white Carrara marble, has now shifted to the importation and fabrication of blocks of marble and granite from other parts of the world.
The province of Massa-Carrara is conventionally divided into two main areas:
- the coastal part of the province is made up of the Apuan Riviera, a 14-km-long strip with long and clear beaches formed by very fine grains of light grey gravel;
- the inland part of the territory is made up of Lunigiana, which is predominantly mountainous and hilly.
