Matagami

Matagami is a small wilderness town in the Jamésie region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Located at the scenic confluence of the Bell and Allard rivers near Matagami Lake, its name translates in the indigenous Cree language to "where the waters meet". Matagami is globally celebrated across the overlanding community as the absolute "Kilometer Zero" gateway to the north, marking the northern terminus of Route 109 and the official starting point of the remote, epic Billy-Diamond Highway (James Bay Road).

Matagami was officially founded in 1963 following extensive mineral and base-metal exploration in the Canadian Shield. Before the mining boom, the territory functioned for centuries as an essential fur-trading crossroads between the local Cree hunters and European merchants.

Today, the town operates on a unique dual identity: the Wilderness Hub, handling the critical service, fueling, and supply infrastructure for forestry and remote travel; and the Great Adventure Portal, representing the final point of civil services before embarking on the isolated 620 km (390 mi) drive north across the subarctic taiga to Radisson.

Matagami is accessible via a single main land transport corridor tracking north through western Quebec.

• Trek the Réseau Bell Nature Trails: Hike this beautiful, well-marked network of eco-trails winding through dense boreal forest canopies right along the banks of the Bell River, featuring scenic suspension bridges and native birdwatching lookouts.
• Golf at the edge of the taiga: Play a round of golf at the Club de Golf de Matagami, an exceptionally scenic 9-hole course cut directly into the rugged wilderness contours of northern Quebec.

Shopping in Matagami is centred strictly around practical provisions, wilderness camping gear, and fuel. Local general stores and service stations sell heavy-duty bug sprays, thick thermal wear, portable fuel canisters, vehicle tie-down straps, and topographical maps. The tourist information office occasionally stocks authentic hand-woven Cree baskets, beaded leather moccasins, and regional historical literature.

Dining in Matagami is casual, hearty, and geared towards sustaining truck drivers, forestry workers, and overlanders embarking on long wilderness expeditions. You won't find fine dining here, but you will find excellent, filling French-Canadian comfort food.
