Matemwe

Matemwe is a village on the East Coast of Zanzibar.

Matemwe is known for its long sandy beach, traditional fishing communities, seaweed farming and proximity to the Mnemba Island marine area.

Matemwe is one of the quieter coastal destinations on Zanzibar. The village stretches along a broad section of the Indian Ocean coast, with traditional homes, fishing areas, small farms and tourist accommodation located between the inland settlement and the beach.

Fishing and seaweed farming have traditionally been important sources of income for local residents. Tourism has become increasingly significant, with small hotels, guesthouses and beach resorts providing accommodation for visitors.

The coastline around Matemwe contains coral reefs and shallow waters that support a variety of marine life. The area is particularly popular with visitors interested in snorkelling, diving and other marine activities.

Matemwe has a warm, humid tropical climate throughout the year. Temperatures remain relatively high, while the Indian Ocean moderates extreme heat along the coast.

The area has distinct wet and dry periods. The main rainy season generally occurs in March–May, with a shorter rainy period later in the year. The dry periods are generally sunnier and more suitable for beach activities.
