Mexico City/Polanco

Polanco refers to an area of Mexico City north of Chapultepec Park. It is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods of Mexico City and commands some of the highest real estate prices, and offers a wide range of upscale boutiques, restaurants and numerous art galleries.

Understand

[edit | edit source]
Museo Soumaya

This district is delimited by Paseo de la Reforma and Chapultepec Park to the south, Boulevard Manuel Avila Camacho (aka Periférico) to the west, Avenida Ejercito Nacional to the north and Avenida Mariano Escobedo to the east. Many streets in the area are named after famous writers, philosophers or scientists; its most notable street, Avenida Presidente Masaryk, is named after a Czech president.

Polanco is known for its cultural diversity. The Jewish community began settling in Polanco in the late 19th century with Russian immigrants establishing an Ashkenazi community and Syrian, Lebanese and other Middle Eastern immigrants establishing a Sephardic community. When Jewish immigrants from various European countries came in the mid-20th century, they were also drawn to Polanco. There are an estimated 50,000 Jews living in Polanco. They have two large synagogues, and the neighborhood supports many Jewish bakeries and kosher restaurants and groceries.

Get in

Map
Map of Mexico City/Polanco

By metro

[edit | edit source]
  • 19.4335-99.19091 Polanco Station (Line  7 , the orange line) is located conveniently in the middle of the area at the corner of Av. Horacio and Calle Arquimedes, one block away from Avenida Presidente Masaryk.
  • 19.42574-99.191912 Auditorio Station (Line  7 ) is on the south side of Polanco and will be more convenient for some Polanco addresses, particularly places near Parque Lincoln.

By bus

[edit | edit source]

Metrobus line 7 runs along Paseo de la Reforma towards Campo Marte. From the stops at Ghandi or Auditorio, it is a short walk into Polanco.

Get around

[edit | edit source]

Walking is the easiest way to get around in most of Polanco, particularly during the evening rush hour (hora pica) when traffic on major roads is gridlocked. At these times, walking is often faster than traveling by car. At other times of the day, Uber and other ride-hailing apps are convenient (and ridiculously affordable).

By bike

[edit | edit source]

Cycling is a good way to get around in Polanco, which has more than a dozen Ecobici loaner bike stations, including 5 along Av. Presidente Masaryk and 4 along Campo Eliseo. There are 2 Ecobici stations on the edge of Parque Lincoln. The nearest Ecobici to the Museo Soumaya and Acuario Inbursa is on Ejercito Nacional at Socrates. See also Cycling in Mexico City.
