History
[edit | edit source]

Mianyang, anciently known as Mianzhou, has a history spanning over 2,200 years since its establishment during the Western Han Dynasty (201 BC). The city holds rich strategic and cultural importance in Sichuan's history, serving as a vital gateway along the ancient Shu Roads (Shudao). During the Three Kingdoms period, Mianyang witnessed key military and political events involving Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei, which are still reflected in local heritage sites like Fule Mountain. In modern times, especially since the late 20th century, Mianyang evolved into China's primary Science and Technology City, hosting major research institutes and high-tech defense industries.

Orientation
[edit | edit source]

Mianyang is situated in the northwestern part of the Sichuan Basin along the upper reaches of the Fujiang River. The city is divided into three main urban districts: Fucheng District (the commercial and cultural downtown core), Youxian District (east of the Fujiang River, known for heritage sites and green parks), and the High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (west side). Modern Mianyang is bounded by the Fujiang River and its tributaries, with major landmark hills like Fule Mountain defining its eastern skyline.

  • Internet and Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafes (such as Starbucks and SPR Coffee), restaurants, and major shopping malls like Wanda Plaza and CapitaLand. Note that mainland China strictly regulates the internet, meaning access to Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and many Western news sites is blocked. You must install a reliable VPN on your devices before arriving in China if you need to use these services.
  • Mobile Phones: You can easily purchase a local prepaid SIM card from major state-owned carriers including China Mobile (中国移动), China Telecom (中国电信), and China Unicom (中国联通). Business halls can be found on almost every major street. You must bring your passport to register for a SIM card. 5G coverage is excellent throughout Mianyang, including rural tourist spots like Fule Mountain.
