Migjorn de Mallorca

Migjorn is the southern region of Mallorca. It has a string of resorts along its coast and more traditional towns inland.

The west of this region includes S'Arenal, but that's effectively part of the Palma resort strip and isn't described here.

Understand

[edit]
Cala d'Or is the main resort

Migjorn means "midday" in Catalan, so it's equivalent to the Midi region of southern France or il Mezzogiorno of southern Italy. Its coast is well-developed for tourism especially where the beaches are sandy. Inland is mostly a level plain, with occasional abrupt hills but not as high as the mountains along the northwest coast. This plain supports traditional small-scale farming, including vineyards. The inland towns don't have much visitor accommodation but several finca farmsteads offer agrotourism stays. The towns are the governing municipalities for the beach resorts, which have far outgrown them.

This region has suffered from unregulated or illegal development, with concrete carbuncles sprouting like undergrowth. The island elders realise there's better and more sustainable income to be gained from nature conservation, so they huff and puff against these developments and occasionally succeed in blowing them down.

Inland locals speak Mallorquí, a dialect of Catalan, but understand Castilian the standard version of Spanish that visitors learn. In the resorts, anyone in the service sector is likely to speak Castilian, English and German.

Get around

[edit]
Puerto Colon

The roads are in good condition but congested at the height of the tourist season. The terrain is suitable for cycling, but it's not much fun with traffic barging past.

Local bus routes branch from the main spine route Palma - Campos - Manacor as described above.

Taxis ply between Palma city and airport and the main towns.

See

[edit]
Botanicactus
  • Felanitx has a pleasant old town centre, with the Church of Sant Miquel.
  • 1 Santuari de Sant Salvador is 7.5 km southeast of Felanitx: it's a hair-pinning road and lung-busting ascent by bicycle. It's a fortress-like pilgrimage site and lookout point, idyllic at sunset.
  • 2 Botanicactus, Ses Salines, +34 971 649494. Daily 10:30-16:30. Extensive cactus garden. Some visitors reckon it's run down and overpriced. Adult €11.
  • Colònia lighthouse is a modern metal tower at the south tip of Colònia town. Na Guardis is the nearby island southeast.
  • 3 Cabrera is an island wildlife reserve reached by boat trips from Colònia.

Do

[edit]
Colònia de Sant Jordi
  • Beaches are sandy in places, rocky elsewhere. Wear beach shoes to protect against sea urchins.
  • Scuba diving: dive shacks as far away as Palma bring their customers to Colònia for diving here or around Cabrera.
  • Golf: Val d'Or Golf is near Portocolom, and there's a driving range at Cala d'Or.
Golf Maioris is near Sa Torre.
Son Antem is a golf resort hotel west of Llucmajor.
  • Fiestas are held on religious holy days, especially Easter.

Buy

[edit]

All the towns have chain supermarkets such as Lidl and Eroski, open daily 09:00-21:00.

Eat

[edit]

Lots of places on the coast serving tapas and Mediterranean full meals.

Drink

[edit]
  • Lots of fresh water, the sun parches you quicker than you realise.
  • This is a wine-growing region, and some of it is distilled into brandy.
  • No free-standing pubs, and this area doesn't have the pubbing-clubbing culture of the likes of Magaluf, but innumerable cafes serve alcohol.
