Skive is a town in West Jutland on the south side of the Limfjord Strait. In the summer, the town attracts tourists to the marina and town centre, but Skive is not a tourist magnet. While Skive definitely presents interesting sees and dos for tourists, prepare for a laid back experience, or use the town as a stopover on your way to and from other destinations in northwest Jutland.
Understand

At just a little more than 20,000 residents, Skive is the urban centre for the rural peninsula of Salling, and the smaller peninsula of Nord-Fjends. Skive is a very old settlement with a long history; the site has been inhabited continuously since at least the late Stone Age, with several ancient stone settings in the area. The town was largely built since the 1800s, when the industrial harbour and the railway was constructed.
In 2026, Skive celebrates its 700-year anniversary as a market town, with several events throughout the year.
Skive is home to the largest military barracks in Denmark, which leaves a significant imprint on the town.
Skive is the gateway to the large hinterland comprising the Salling peninsula, Nordfjends peninsula, and the two islands of Mors and Fur, all part of the Limfjord region. Mors and Fur became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2026, due to their important fossil sites from the Eocene epoch.

[edit | edit source]Skive doesn't have its own tourist information office, but maintains the Skive Portalen web-site with programmes, schedules, and information on what's going on.

[edit | edit source]Skive and the Salling region is served by the Midttrafik bus company, as the rest of West Jutland (and East Jutland), and is well-connected by bus lines.
Take a blue regional bus to Skive Central Station from any larger town in West or East Jutland.
For local transport in and around Skive, take one of the local bus lines here. They are also run by Midttrafik. Remember that you can use your train tickets on the buslines as well, if you onboard within the time limit. Skive used to have its own city-bus system, but it closed permanently in June 2026. Skive is an important bus stop on Primærrute 26 (Primary Route 26), connecting Aarhus to Hanstholm. This is the quickest route you can take to Thisted, Hanstholm, and the whole region of Thy, in North Jutland.
By train

Arrive by train via Viborg or Struer.
The train from Viborg takes half an hour, and from Aarhus is 1½ hour.
The Struer Central Station connects to the rest of West Jutland and also the northwestern part of North Jutland, beyond the Limfjord, known as Thy. The rail line is called Thybanen (Thy Line) and traverse a railway bridge to Thyholm and Hurup Thy, and onwards to the town of Thisted further north. If you are going to the northwest, by the Salling peninsula, take a bus, or drive your own car.
Remember you can use your train tickets on buslines as well, if you onboard within the time limit.
- 1 Skive Central Station. Central train and bus station. There are two supermarkets (Føtex and Lidl) next to the station, and a car rental (Oscar) a fifteen-minute walk north.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]National Bicycle Route N12 pass through Skive from Nordfjends and trace the coasts of Salling on its way to Struer. The route is also known as Limfjordsruten (The Limfjord Route) and runs along the entire Limfjord for a total of 630 km.
National Bicycle Route N2 pass through Skive from Viborg on its way northwest towards Mors and Hanstholm in the Thy region. It is also known as The Hanstholm-Copenhagen Route.
Get around
[edit | edit source]Walking is a great (and the only) way to experience Skives old pedestrianised town centre. You can also easily walk to all other town destinations.
By car
[edit | edit source]There are many parking lots around the town centre. Most have charging stations, and a few have gas stations. You can easily drive to most spots in Skive, and a car is the best, quickest, and most comfortable option, if you want to explore the hinterlands of Salling and Nordfjends.

- 1 Posthustorvet. Central town square in the pedestrianised area. Good starting point for a city walk. Saturday late morning and afternoon is typically the most busy time of the week here.
- 2 Skive Kunstmuseum. Skive art museum. kr 90 (free for children under 18).
- 3 Skive Anlæg, Havnevej 13. Nice park.
- 4 Vor Frue Kirke, Frederiksdal Alle 1A. Daily 08:00-17:00 (both churches). Beautiful historic white-washed church dating back to 1200. There is a small church park, and Vor Frue Kirke is next to another church in red brick (Skive Church) from 1898. Free.

- 3 Skive Theater, Theaterpladsen 10. Skive's theatre scene with 125 years of experience. Also concerts and stand-up.
- 4 Kulturcenter Skive (KulturCenter Limfjorden), Skyttevej 12-14. Big cultural centre in the southern parts of town. Theatre, swimming pools, cinema, cafés, concerts, talks, restaurant, meeting facilities. A contemporary take on the traditional village hall.
- 5 Bowl'n Fun (across from the cultural centre). Bowling centre and various entertainment. Eatery with burgers and buffet food.
- 6 Skive Trav. Horse racing. On-site restaurant (buffet kr 249), and two eateries.
Festivals and events
[edit | edit source]- 7 Skive Festival. Three-day music festival in early June.
- Kunstdage ved Limfjorden. 10:00-17:00 every day of the festival. 'Art Days at the Limfjord' is an annual art festival across the region around Skive. Local artists open their workshops and talks about their work and art. Download the festival app and find out more about the local artists of this region. 14th to 17 May (2026) in the 'Feast of Ascension' holiday (Kristi Himmelfartsferien in Danish). Free.
Beaches
[edit | edit source]- 8 Strandtangen. Sandy beach just north of the marina. Popular in the summer.
- 9 Resen Strand. Sandy beach stretch north of town. Beautiful nature.
- 10 Marienlyst Strand. Long sandy beach at the Skive Fjord Camping site north of town.
Hiking
[edit | edit source]There are several interesting hiking trails in and around Skive.
- 11 Skive Å (Ådalen) (start from the Central Station parking lot and walk south across the bridge). Roundtrip around the small Karup Å river that flows through Skive. The trail should take 1 to 1½ hour, but can be cut short for a quicker hike.
- 12 Krabbesholm Skov. An urban forest stroll through an old deciduous woodland east and north of the harbour. Paths criss-cross the forest patch. There are no markers, so you just pick your own route as you walk.
- Out of town
- 13 Naturpark Flyndersø. Beautiful trail through Nature Park Flyndersø southeast of Skive, one of 15 national nature parks in Denmark. Flyndersø lake is surrounded by heathlands, bogs, and forests and presents amazing views in late spring and summer. Start off from the visitor center Flyndersø Mølle and follow the trails. The entire lake is a 30-km hike with several obstacles, but there are much shorter and easier routes as well, which you can both bike and walk. There is a camp site (Skive Flyndersø Camping) just north of the visitor centre, if you want to stay overnight in the area.
- 14 Skive Plantage to Flyndersø. You can hike all the way from Skive to Flyndersø Mølle visitor centre by following this route. It is marked by green arrows, but the trail can be very muddy during and after rain.

- 6 Jagt & Fiskeri Skive, Katkjærvej 1. Mon-Fri 09:30-17:00, Sat 09:30-13:00. Gear, clothes, and accessories for hunting, fishing, and outdoor life. This is also where you buy a fishing licence, which is obligatory for leisure fishing in Denmark.

Book a table in advance on-line. Take-away option, so you can stack up here for your picnic plans.

[edit | edit source]- 6 Det Varme Brød, Aage Nielsens Vej 2. Tue-Sun from 06:30. With a name meaning 'The Hot Bread' this bakery does indeed serve freshly baked delights. Regular Danish bakery with good quality, prices, and variety. This is a take-away shop and you can also buy cheese, jam, cold cuts and dairy.
- 7 Lagkagehuset Skive, Søndre Boulevard 7. Every day. High-end bakery of the popular Lagkagehuset bakery café chain. Click and collect option. Perfect for some breakfast or brunch.
- 8 Kaffemøllen, Fredriksgade 2B. Mon-Fri 10:00-17:00, Sat 10:00-14:00. Bakery and café. Great cakes, bread, and sandwiches, including gluten free. Breakfast option and hot meal of the day (vegetarian) for lunch (12:30-15:30).
- 9 Chokolet, Nørregade 2B. Café and chocolaterie with some incredible handmade chocolate treats. Good coffee and of course hot chocolate. Also bread, cakes, and softice with wafles or pancakes.
Drink
[edit | edit source]- 1 Hancock Breweries, Humlevej 32. Visit the famous local brewery on Wednesdays for a free guided tour, except in July and December. You can join in at 09:30-12:00 or in the evening 19:30-22:00. Private tours outside the schedule can be arranged if you are 15-30 people. You can also try the Hancock brews around Skives bars and pubs.
- 2 Havnens Vinotek. Winebar (and wineshop) near the harbour
- 3 John Bull Pub, Thinggade 13A. Thu-Sat from 19:00.
- 4 Potten, Torvestræde 2, (just around the corner from the town hall). Every day from 10:00. Beer and wine bar with some special brews on tap. Sometimes live music. Smoking allowed.
- 5 Zwei Grosse Bier Bar, Nordbanevej 23. Thu from 21:00, Fri Sat from 22:00. Beer bar geared for partying. Mostly young people.

[edit | edit source]- 4 Højslev Kro, Viborgvej 220, 7840 Højslev. For a luxurious stay, book a room at this historic place southeast of town. The house and stay is an experience in itself and you can choose to combine it with excellent food and dinners.
- 5 Skive Fjord Camping, Marienlyst Strand 15. Camp site north of town with easy access to the Marienlyst Beach.

Stay healthy
[edit | edit source]There are several pharmacies in Skive, but they all seems to be closed on Sundays.

As part of that, Skive is an important stop on the interregional road Primary Route 26; the quickest route to Thisted, Hanstholm, and the whole region of Thy in North Jutland.
Salling and Nordfjends
[edit | edit source]Salling is the large peninsula north and west of Skive.
- 6 Jenle (Aakjærs Kunstnerhjem Jenle). 6 June - 31 August: 11:00-17:00; 1-13 September: 11:00-16:00. Former home and now museum to the treasured Danish poet and writer Jeppe Aakjær, open for guided tours in the summer. Events are held regularly (check the homepage), and every year Aakjær's birthday is celebrated on the 10th of september. Take a stroll around the surrounding woodland and beach meadows, find specific routes on the homepage, which includes an audio guide (in Danish). kr 50 or kr 100 for a guided tour (free for children).
- 7 Thise Dairy. Big and well-renowned organic coop dairy in the small village of Thise in the northeast of Salling. Thise dairy have been a forerunner in the organic farming industry in Denmark since its conception in 1988 and continues to innovate and develop this business and concept. Their high-end products are widely available all over Denmark, but at their on-site dairy shop you can have a peek at their broad range of products. Join a guided tour every Thursday in week 27-31. kr 75 (free for kids younger than 12).

Beautiful lake area west of Skive.
- 8 Spøttrup Borg, Borgen 6A, 7860 Spøttrup (at Spøttrup Sø). Medieval fortress. Open for visits from late March to late October, see the website for details. The guided tour takes about an hour. kr 95 (free for children under 18).
- 15 Vadum Strand. Beach just west of the lake, where it drains into the Limfjord
Nordfjends
[edit | edit source]Nordfjends is the smaller peninsula northeast of Skive.
- 9 Bruddal Høje (go east from Skive by Viborgvej, and then north by Hobrovej). Three Bronze Age barrows. The area is protected, but freely accessible to visitors. The view from the top is magnificent. Free.
- Lundø. Experience the nature around the small Lundø peninsula. Visit the 10 Lundø Tårnet tower for local information, 16 hike the beach meadows and stony reefs, stay overnight at 6 Lundø Strand Camping or one of the primitive shelters in the area, and dine at 11 Restaurant Øhaven in Lundø village. Lundø is a notable bird site with shallow beaches and good water quality. It is most interesting at low tide when the reefs are exposed, and if in luck, you can find amber here or spot seals. Enjoy the resting seals, but keep a good distance! The beaches are sometimes popular with coast-fishers looking for trout at some spots, and in the summer, holidaymakers and windsurfers flocks here. There are several parking lots in the area and a public toilet at the northern spit. Free.
Mors and Fur
[edit | edit source]Mors is a large island northwest of Salling and Fur is a smaller island north of Salling, both in the Limfjord.
Fur and Mors have been a geological hotspot for many years, with important fossil sites from the Eocene specifically (33-55 million years ago), when this part of the world was a subtropical ocean with sea turtles and sea snakes. In 2026, both islands became listed by UNESCO as a natural world heritage site named The Bony Fish Fossils of the Western Limfjord – Evolution and Climate Adaptation in the Earliest Eocene.
Fur
[edit | edit source]
There is no bridge to Fur, so you will have to take the ferry or sail your own leisure boat.
- 4 Fursund Færgen, Fur Landevej 130, Roslev (go to the docking site and present yourself to the surveillance cameras if no one is coming). Every 15 minute. The Fursund ferry leaves every fifteen minutes from the small village of Branden for a total number of 72 crossings day and night! It is not possible to book a ticket in advance, so stand in line and wait for your turn. Tickets are bought on board, but take note that you can only pay with card (Mastercard, Visa Card, Visa Electron Card and Dankort). Free for people and bicycles. kr 120 for a car. kr 60 for a motorbike.
- 17 Fursund Touristinformation, Stenøre 10, Fur (a short walk from the Fur harbour). Jul Aug: daily from 10:00. Official tourist information office for the island of Fur. Also helpful with information on tourist-related stuff for Salling. Check their website for details and more useful information.
- 7 Fur Camping, Råkildevej 6, Fur. Not just a campsite, this place also does cabins, glamping, and bed & breakfast. On-site eatery and kiosk, please pre-order. Fur Camping is GreenStay and EU Ecolabel certified. Several marked hiking trails starts off from this spot.
- 11 Fur Museum, Nederby 28, Fur. Tue-Sun 10:00-16:00. Experience some of the important fossils found on Fur and learn about not just the deep history of this island, but the ancient Earth and former climate changes. The museum is open from late March to mid October. Sometimes special tours and events, check the website. kr 80 (free for children).
- 7 Fur Bryghus, Knudevej 3, Fur, ☏ +45 97 59 30 60, reservation@furbryghus.dk. From 11:30. Celebrated craft brewery. The on-site restaurant offers good solid lunch made with local ingredients, book a table before arrival. Sometimes live music. Check the website for specific opening days and hours, but this place is open every day in July and August.
Mors
[edit | edit source]Mors, occasionally referred to as Morsø, is a farmer's island with an important traffic connection to the western parts of North Jutland; the regions also known as Thy and Han Herred. The main town is Nykøbing Mors, and this is also where you will find the official tourist office for the island.

Official tourist office for the island of Mors (aka Morsø). In addition to tourist information on the island and the region, you can also rent holiday homes, bicycles, and canoes here, as well as all-inclusive hiking or biking tours. It's a bit of everything.
- 19 Jesperhus (Jesperhus Blomsterpark), Legindvej 30, Nykøbing Mors (just across Sallingsundbroen Bridge from the Salling peninsula). Big family-oriented holiday center with three entertainment parks, including a water park. Stay in a hut, a van, or camp with your own tent. You can also buy a day pass to the entertainment parks, check prices and hours on the website.
- 12 Fossil and Mo-clay Museum, Skarrehagevej 8, Nykøbing Mors (North of the village of Sejerslev). Opening hours depends on the season (18 May - 30 August: daily 10:00-16:00). Experience interesting local fossil finds from the Eocene, and engage in on-site excavations yourself. kr 90.
At the northern tip of Mors, you can take a ferry across the narrow strait of Feggesund to reach the regions of Han Herred and Thy.
- 20 Feggesund Ferry (Feggesundfærgen), Feggesundvej 85, Nykøbing Mors (go to the northern tip of Mors). The ferry pendulates across the narrow Feggesund strait every 20 minutes and can also carry cars. You can eat and stay overnight at the inn.
- 8 Feggesund Færgekro, Feggesundvej 81, Nykøbing Mors (right at the ferry harbour), ☏ +45 97 75 10 32. The kitchen is open daily in the summer (11:30-20:00). Historic countryside kro with accommodation and restaurant right at the ferry harbour. The restaurant serves traditional Danish food, including all-you-can-eat pan-fried eel as a unique speciality. kr 800 for a double bedroom (incl. breakfast).
- Hiking
There are plenty of opportunities for good nature hiking on Mors.
- 21 Legind Bjerge og Højris (Legind Hills and Højris) (Go to Jesperhus). Many opportunities for short or extended 1-day nature hikes in an undulating landscape of forest, open land, and coastal terrain, just south of Nykøbing Mors. Start your tour from a parking area near Jesperhus and pick your route from there. For an extended hike, visit the Medieval 13 Højriis Castle further south. Free.
- The Coastal Route (Kystruten Mors Rundt), Vestergade 10, Nykøbing Mors. Visit Mors, the official local tourist bureau for Mors, sells an all-inclusive hiking package for a 7-day roundtrip of the island. The package include overnight stays in double bedrooms at local hosts, breakfasts, evening dinners, and make-your-own-lunch, as well as a book about the route. There are two shorter 4-day hikes available as well. kr 4395 per person.
