Fjerritslev

Fjerritslev is a small town in North Jutland, approximately halfway between Thisted and Aalborg. It is the main town of the Han Herred region, although only 3,300 people live here (2026), which explains how thinly populated this region is.

Han Herred (or Hanherred) is the strip of land between the North Sea and the Limfjord, connecting the Thy region in the west to the Vendsyssel region in the east. Han Herred translates as "Han Shire", or "Han Hundred", in English.

Because of the sparse population in and around Fjerritslev, not much is going on here, but the region has a deep history, and the landscapes are beautiful in late spring and summer. If you include the whole region of Han Herred, there are several points of interest to travellers around here.

The nature and coastal landscapes are the most notable attractions in the Han Herred region. There are several options for camping, both organised camping grounds and in wild nature, but to stock up on groceries and basic necessities, you will need to go to the towns of Fjerritslev, Brovst, Tranum, or Frøstrup. This is also where you will find charging stations for your car or fossil fuels.

As the rest of the North Sea coast in Denmark, The North Sea coast in Han Herred is popular with holiday-makers in the summer, but not as crowded as most other places.

Fjerritslev probably started out as a farming village in Medieval times. When the road between Aalborg and Thisted was built in the 1830s, the town began to grow and develop. People have lived in Han Herred since the Stone Ages, as testified by ancient barrows and archaeological finds.

Car or bus is the easiest way to reach Fjerritslev.

Fjerritslev is reached by the Primærrute 11 (Primary Route 11) road from either Aalborg or Thisted, or it is reached by the Primærrute 29 (Primary Route 29) from the town of Aars in Himmerland, via the Aggersundbroen bridge straddling the Limfjord north of Løgstør. You can also reach the region from the island of Mors directly by the small Feggesund car-ferry at the Amtoft Harbour southwest of Fjerritslev.

Nordjyllands Traffikselskab serves Fjerritslev and Han Herred with public busses, both locally and regional, but the service is very limited on school holidays, check their website for details.

Outside school holidays, you can get in by bus from Hobro by Aars and the Aggersundbroen bridge in the south, from Thisted in the west, and from Aalborg in the east. There is also a route from the north by the small villages of Saltum and Kaas close to Blokhus.

Two national bicycle routes pass through Han Herred.

• National Bicycle Route N1. This route reach Han Herred from Hanstholm in Thy and runs along the North Sea coast towards Løkken. The entire route connects Skagen to Rudbøl, near Tønder, at the German border, and is also known as Vestkystruten (The West Coast Route). (updated Sep 2026)
• National Bicycle Route N12. This route reach Han Herred from Thisted in Thy and runs along the calmer Limfjord coast towards Aalborg in the east. It is also known as Limfjordsruten (The Limfjord Route) and trace around the entire Limfjord for a total distance of 630 km. (updated Sep 2026)

Fjerritslev can easily be done on two legs. Vestergade and Østergade are the main shopping streets of the small town.

If you want to visit other destinations in Han Herred, a car or a bicycle is a better option, depending on how far you need to go. You can find charging and gas stations in the towns of Fjerritslev, Brovst, Tranum, and Frøstrup.

Local public buses don't run on school holidays, which coincide with peak tourism seasons.

Most of the buildings are more recent additions (mostly 1550 and 1750) and the manor became a local communal and cultural house in 1976. Access is free, and there is an on-site café. Be sure to visit the associated park. Every Thursday in July (10:00-14:00) public events are held, where a large group of volunteers dress up in historical clothes and hosts a variety of arrangements: folk music, farmer's market, former times everyday life, or veteran car show, to name some of the 2026 happenings. Every year on the first weekeend of Advent (27-28 November in 2026), Christmas markets are held, presenting craft sales, Christmas food and sweet treats, storytelling, and a decorated Christmas tree. Only the ramparts of the fortress remains, but archaologists have unearthed many important finds related to its history. In the Viking Age, the Limfjord was an important meeting point for warrior bands embarking on Viking raids across Europe. Learn more in the small visitor centre, and follow a digital app guide, while walking around this historic place. Special Viking Days throughout the summer with engaging activities for all age groups, watch the web-site calendar. If you plan to visit as a group, contact the site managers for special guided tours, if you are interested in a more detailed and personal experience. There is a small visitor museum with public toilets in the WWII bunker near the top. Be careful of the eroding limestone cliff, don't stand near the edges. Bulbjerg is a certified Dark Sky Park with magnificent views of the nightsky, but due to the northly position of Denmark, the darkest time of year is the winter months.  (updated Aug 2026)

• 57.03319.10158 Vejlerne, Bygholmvejlevej 640, Fjerritslev. Wetland nature site and an important bird area, part of the largest bird protection in Northern Europe. Watchtowers and visitor centre. The reedbeds are truly extensive and you can enter their special world by footbridges to study the birds, and other fauna, close up in hideout huts. If you are not into birds already, this place might get you hooked. Some species breeds and overwinters here, while others use Vejlerene as an important stop over on migratory routes in early spring and autumn. More than 300 bird species have been registered in this wetland, and the large flocks (crane, geese, golden plover, ducks, and many more) can indeed be an impressive sight, even for people uninterested in birds. Look out for the phenomenon called "black sun" (sort sol) in late summer and autumn, when huge flocks of starlings forages across the skies in the sunset.  (updated Aug 2026)

There are only four towns in the region: Fjerritslev, Brovst, Tranum, and Frøstrup, but there are points of interest scattered throughout the countryside as well.

The second largest town in Han Herred with a little more than 2,600 residents. It is a small market town east of Fjerritslev and boasts a beautiful, historic manor: The Bratskov Manor House. Outside the town itself, you will find the Medieval Kokkedal Castle, and the former monastery Oxholm.

Jernbanegade is the central high street.

Small village with just about 600 residents. This is where local farmers go to get their machines fixed. Frøstrup is the nearest shopping opportunity for visitors the Bulbjerg nature site.

57.151478.9641614 Lild Strand - Small, quiet fishing settlement in a remote spot near Bulbjerg. Go here, if you want to enjoy a quiet time in nature, or visit on a long-distance hike as a stop over. The are a few bead and breakfast options and several summer houses in the area might be available for rent. Lild Strand is a good choice, if you want to stay overnight in the Bulbjerg area and don't want to camp out in a tent. In the darker part of the year, starting from September, several group activities related to the Bulbjerg Dark Sky Park are arranged from Lild Strand.

• Fest i Dalen, Skræmvej 4, Fjerritslev. Small one-day festival in the summer. Music, food, beer, and good times. In 2026, it will be held on 29th of August. The festival is free to attend, but pre-book your food ticket. Free. 

There are several historic monuments in the region. They are hardly worth a long detour, but might be an interesting visit if you happen to be in their vicinity.

• 57.140739.282816 Grønnestrand Mill (Grønnestrand Mølle), Grønnestrandvej 228. Nice old heather-covered mill, and the only one of its kind in Denmark. It was built in 1876 with driftwood and restored in 1990. Can only be experienced from the outside.

The entire estate is on private hands, but the associated church is open for visits every Wednesday and Sunday in July (14:00-16:00). There is also an old flour mill close by that is also open for visits at the same time. North of the manor house, you will find the forest of Oxholm Skov. It is also on private hands, but free to visit from dusk til dawn, if you refrain from smoking and don't leave any trash. Free.  
• 57.058739.2943718 Husby Hole (just north of the small hamlet of Husby). Memorial stone for a great battle fought here in 1441 between local peasants and the aristocracy. Parking lot and public toilet. Good views from the hill top and opportunity for a nice small nature hike in the wood and heathland stretching north. The area is a good place to pick wild berries from July through September (blackberry, raspberry, and elderberry in the woods. Blueberry, lingonberry, and crowberry on the heath) and the heath holds several ancient barrows, collectively known as Skårhøjene. Husby Hole is part of the long-distance hiking route Hærvejen  (updated Aug 2026)
• 57.057669.4469219 Hvisselhøj (near the hamlet of Attrup). Unique and well-preserved ancient passage grave from the Stone Age, built by the Funnelbeaker Culture more than 5000 years ago. It is possible to enter the three empty chambers. Many other ancient barrows in the area, but Hvisselhøj is the most interesting one. If you go south, past the farm at the road bend, you will find a public trail to the tiny nature site of Alsbjerg Hills. There is a great view across the landscape from the hill top there.  (updated Aug 2026)

• Sankt Hans Aften. Hours vary, but if you arrive around 18:00 you should be able to make it anywhere. Midsummer Fest, a traditional Norse celebration on the evening of 23rd of June (Saint John's Eve). Large bonfires are lighted in the evening and people gather around to sing, socialise, and have a good time. You can attend Sank Hans Aften in several spots around Han Herred, here is a selection: at the park in Fjerritslev, in the town of 57.087299.527443 Brovst, at the North Sea beaches of Thorup Strand, Slettestrand, and Tranum Strand, and at the Limfjord coast in 57.039089.455084 Attrup Harbour, and 57.006579.280095 Aggersund. Go to the beach on the North Sea coast, there are several good spots in this region. Great option for a beautiful sunset experience year round. The entire Jammerbugt Bay is an important commercial fishing spot in Denmark, and has been for centuries. While the vast majority of the catch is landed in Hanstholm and Hirtshals, you can also find a couple of smaller landing spots around Han Herred, and the locals are proud of their history and keeps the traditional ways of life alive here.

The North Sea beaches in Han Herred are not crowded in the summer, even though the water quality is excellent and as good as it gets (check here). In most places, the beach is broad, waters are shallow and quite warm in the summer (20 °C (68 °F) and up in late June and July); perfect for beach and water activities. The downside is that gravel and small stones can dominate some stretches, in contrast to the beaches near Blokhus further north for example.

This is a perfect place to get freshly caught fish straight from the North Sea, as they are landed directly on the beach here. There are many summer houses in the area, and if you can find a vacant one for rent, you can use Thorup Strand as a base for exploring the protected nature around Bulbjerg to the west, but you will have to stock up on groceries elsewhere.

• 57.138019.16919 Klim Strand - Good beach, but no amenities except for parking areas. However, in the summer, for kr 75, you can buy access to the Klim Strand Camping wellness and indoor pool facilities, which includes showers and toilets.
• 57.1429.266810 Grønnestrand (aka Kollerup Strand) – a beautiful nature site and good beach, possibly the best in the region. Parking lots and a public toilet in the southern part, but otherwise no amenities here. Parts of the beach is designated naturist beach, but anyone is welcome, just be respectful.

• 57.1778819.43702913 Ejstrup Strand - This is the only beach in Han Herred, where you can drive your car on to the beach. There is also a parking lot inland, if you don't want to. Great sandy beach, but no amenities here other than public toilets.

Fjerritslev and the Han Herred region offers many great opportunities for nature hikes. The landscapes are varied and most hikes are relatively short and easy. Late May to October is the most beautiful time of year.

Watch out for snakes (European Adder) in the heathlands. They are neither abundant nor aggressive, and if you stick to the trails, are observant, or wear boots and long trousers, you will be completely safe. In case you get bitten, it is good to know that only 10-15% of bites lead to serious complications, but call the emergency line in any case. Don't touch the bite area, don't move around, and remain as calm as possible. Children, weak, or allergic people are the most vulnerable.

At the church you will find a Sun sculpture and when you follow the trail north by Brøndumvej and then Kollerup Strandvej, you will spot all the planets of the Solarsystem in a 1:1,000,000,000 scale. Kollerup Beach is also known as Grønnestrand and is a beautiful nature site.  (updated Aug 2026)
• Tingskoven (Tingskov), Trekronervejen (Hike (or bike) from Fjerritslev or Brovst to the hamlet of Bonderup south of the forest, trails leads all the way. You can also reach the marked forest trails directly by car.). Tingskoven is an inland forest between Fjerritslev and Brovst. While the forest only dates back to the 1870s, the area is home to several ancient sites, and as its name implies, it served as a thingstead in olden times. Two marked routes here, but you are free to explore on your own, just be aware that hunting is happening occasionally. The 57.076779.3900415 yellow trail (just 700 m) leads to Andebjerg; an ancient barrow and stone setting. The 57.087079.404116 blue trail (1.7 km) leads to the original Thingstead (Søhøje). Both routes are accessible from the Trekronervejen road. North of Tingskoven, just beyond its edge, there is also a marked nature trail (2.5 km), where you can start out from around 57.10139.425817 Egebjerg; a heather-covered group of hills with several ancient barrows and a magnificent view across the landscape, or from a parking lot and shelter further north, closer to 57.109669.4355218 Janum Kjøt, a large stone brought here by glaciers during the last Ice Age (known as a 'glacial erratic'). (updated Aug 2026)

• 57.073989.6545919 Ulvedybet og Bjerget (go to the summerhouse area just west of Gjøl village). Wildlife protection and important bird site. The gull, tern, and duck colonies are large here, but the lake area is also an important breeding and feeding ground for wading birds, meadow birds, and several birds of prey. Look out for grey heron, pied avocet, great ringed plover, or spoonbill for example, and if you are in luck, you might spot various species of hawks, falcons, and eagles. Start your tour at the hill of Bjerget (aka Gjøl Bjerg) and cross the long dike (Gjøl Dæmning) to the reach the birdwatching tower on the western brink, then backtrack. It takes a small hour to cross the dike on foot. The hill provides a magnificent landscape vista and there are public toilets, a parking lot, fresh water, and a shelter there, while the tower provides excellent views of the wading birds in particular. Combine the hike with a visit to nearby Oxholm forest if you want more hiking. Administratively, the Ulvedybet protection is divided between the Han Herred and the Vendsyssel region. You can buy local honey at Gjøl Bigård near Bjerget, eat lunch at Gjøl Kro, and sleep at Bikers Barn.  (updated Aug 2026)

The long-range hiking trails of Hærvejen, Nordsøstien, and Vestkyststien pass through the coastal landscapes north of Fjerritslev and you can connect to them at several spots:

• 57.10989.268320 Kollerup Plantage (walk here from Fjerritslev, or park at one of several parking lots). Woodland immediately north of Fjerritslev. Three short, marked trails of 4 km (green), 6.4 km (blue), and 1.4 km (yellow), respectively. The forest is mostly conifer, with heathland in between and a central bare hill. Look out for mountainbikers. There is a public toilet at a shelter near the hill in the middle of the forest. The short yellow trail leads you around another local hilltop, presenting great vistas across the landscape and two Stone Age passage graves.The trails in Kollerup Plantage connects to the nature site of Grønnestrand and to the Svinkløv Plantage further north.  (updated Aug 2026)

• 57.13519.343721 Svinkløv Plantage (there are many parking lots in the area, where you can start the hike). Three short and marked trails in the Svinkløv coastal woodlands. Do one or them all in one hike, they are 4.3 km (red), 3.2 km (yellow), and 4.5 km (also red) respectively. The yellow route is the easiest way to pack in a varied experience, ranging from pine forest and dune heath, to a surprising ravine with deciduous woodland and abundant honeysuckle. The honeysuckle blooms in June and July and covers the valley in their overpowering scent. There is a public toilet at the parking lot near the Svinkløv beach hotel. One of the red trails reach southward along the coastal bluffs, an area known as Svinklovene. The grasslands are maintained by wild horses and the hills presents grand vistas of the North Sea coast.  (updated Aug 2026)
• 57.118849.388122 Fosdalen and Lien (park your car in the forests northeast of Fjerritslev or go to the town of Tranum; you can start the hike at several spots). Hike the undulating landscape in the Fosdalen forest and the Lien coastal hills. The well-marked trails are relatively short, but the terrain can be exhausting. The longest trail is 11 km, but you can cut it short in several spots, and also extend it. The hiking trails here are highly rated and include highlights such as holy springs, wild woodland, heaths, ancient barrows, and the highest hill of the entire region (Bavnehøj). There are two public toilets and options for camping overnight.  (updated Aug 2026)

• Bulbjerg and surroundings (Lild Klitplantage, Vester Thorup Klitplantage). The area surrounding the Bulbjerg sea cliff is protected and offers many shorter or longer nature hikes in some of the wildest nature in Denmark. Vast dune heaths, woodlands (mostly conifer), small lakes, hilltops, and beaches. The fauna includes deer, hare, many different birds, beaver, and possibly wolf. You can stay by camping out in your own tent, or use the nearby settlements of Thorup Strand, Lild Strand, or Frøstrup as a more comfortable base. The only place to stock up on gorceries is in Frøstrup. The area connects to the long-distance hiking routes of Nordsøstien and Vestkyststien. (updated Aug 2026)

Because of the rural conditions, it's important to know where you can buy basic groceries and where you can refuel your car or motor vehicle.

You can have Danish specialities even at the fine restaurants around Han Herred, meals like smørrebrød, stjerneskud, or stegt rødspætte med persillesovs, but only a few places have a specific focus on traditional Danish cuisine.

Thursday nights, the menu is Stegt flæsk med persillesovs (Crispy pork with parsley sauce) specifically and Sunday nights presents a huge buffet of classic Danish specialities. Both nights are all-you-can-eat, call in advance to reserve a table. Due to a staff shortage, Vesløs Kro is only open for dining on Thursdays and Sundays until 1st October 2026, but you can contact them regarding take-away options.

Dish of the day (evening) is always traditional Danish fare: stegt flæsk med persillesovs, flæskesteg, hakkebøf med bløde løg, or mørbradgryde, and the à la carte menu also presents smørrebrød, stjerneskud, pariserbøf, and gammeldags æblekage. Seafood is a large part of the menus around Han Herred, at simple food stalls and fancy restaurants. Go to Thorup Strand to buy your own fresh seafood at the fishmongers, straight from the North Sea.

A classic, traditional Danish summertime seafood dish tied to the North Sea coast is stegt rødspætte med persillesovs, which comprise breaded and fried plaice, served with white parsley sauce and new potatoes. It is simple, elegant, and very tasty if done right. Go to one of the high-end restaurants to try it.

Fjerritslev is on the Primary Route 11 road between Aalborg and Thisted, about 50 km each way.

• Thisted — main town for the Thy region and access point to the large Thy National Park.
• Aalborg — main city for all of North Jutland, complete with an international airport, major harbour, university, and a thriving trade and industry. Aalborg is also the only real city in the entire region.
• Himmerland — reach this region of North Jutland by driving south along Primary Route 29 across the Aggersundbroen bridge.
• Mors — go to the Amtoft ferry harbour at the southern tip of the Hannæs peninsula (at Vejlerne), and take the 56.981538.915923 Feggesund Ferry to reach the island of Mors. The small ferry pendulates across the narrow Feggesund strait every 20 minutes and can also carry cars. There is a historic countryside inn (Feggesund Færgekro) on the other side of the strait, where you can sleep and eat.
