Thy National Park

Thy National Park is in the western part of North Jutland, Denmark. It was the first national park in Denmark and forms a significant part of the Thy region.

Thy National Park was established in 2008 as the first national park in Denmark proper (the first in the Kingdom was created in Greenland in 1974). The park covers a 244 km² stretch of land between Agger Tange in the south and Hanstholm in the north, all at the North Sea coast.

The main visitor centre for the national park is located in the coastal settlement of Nørre Vorupør. The four settlements of Hanstholm, Klitmøller, Vorupør, and Agger are almost completely enclosed by the national park, and all serves as a good base for experiencing and exploring it.

Thy National Park presents some of the wildest nature in Denmark. The wild coastal landscape stretches much further north, including the whole Han Herred region.

Most of the park consists of grass-covered coastal dunes, heathland, and then woodlands further inland in the east. Lakes and small bogs are dotted throughout.

Thy National Park is home to many protected plants and animals, some of them rare and threatened, but the protection also has to do with preserving the coastal landscape itself, as unadulterated coastal landscapes are now a rarity across Europe and the world at large.

Among animals, the birdlife is the most prolific and obvious. Denmark as a whole is a crucial resting stop internationally for many migratory birds, and Thy National Park contributes a significant part. Waterfowl is mostly found in the northern and southern ends of the protection, while ground nesting birds and seabirds are scattered throughout. This means that some areas are illegal to enter from 1st of April to 15th of July, and smaller parts at the northern and southern ends are permanent no-go zones year round. Always keep your dog on a leash and get all detailed information at the National Park visitor centre in Vorupør.

Several mammalians live in Thy National Park, but they tend to be shy, so you might easily miss them. Roe Deer is the most plentiful of the large animals, but the park is also home to the mighty Red Deer, although the latter tends to be nocturnal roamers, except for August through October, when the stags are in rut and much bolder. Other mammals include badger, otter, beaver, fox, as well as two species of seal and twelve species of bats no less. In the early 2010s, wolf established here as breeders, after 200 years of absence, but they are also shy of humans, and you should consider yourself lucky, if you will spot one. Keep your distance to all the wildlife in the area, disturb the animals as little as possible, and enjoy them from a distance.

The amphibian, reptile, and insect life in Thy National Park also forms a base for the protection. Species of toads, frogs, and lizards, as well as butterflies, moths, beetles, and small spiders that are vulnerable or threatened in the rest of Denmark, or Europe at large, are thriving here. There is a healthy population of wart-biter crickets, and as the females are fairly large, you might well spot some on the dry dune heaths in the summer. Just be aware of the poisonous Northern Viper on the heaths as well, although they are a rare sight and shy creatures.

The wind from the North Sea is relentless out here. There are relatively calm days, but expect heavy wind, and you will know what to prepare for.

In the summer, when the Sun is shining, the waters of the North Sea are warm enough for a dip from mid-June through July; which means 20 °C (68 °F) and up in a Danish context. However, as the beaches are very much part of the nature protection, if you want beach activity specifically, look elsewhere on the North Sea coast of Jutland, or go to Agger, Vorupør, or Klitmøller, if you want to stay in the area.

There are a total of five visitor centres in Thy National Park, but the main one is in Vorupør:

Daily from February through November (check web-site for hours). The main visitor center for the national park is located on the beach in the village of Nørre Vorupør. Go here to get inspiration, buy maps, books, or brochures, and ask guides for good tips and advice. Large parking lot with charging station, fresh water, and public toilets. Pay what you want.  

The coastal settlement of Vorupør (aka Nørre Vorupør) is the main gate to Thy National Park and where the main visitor centre is located.

Vorupør is an old fishing village, but all commercial fishing gradually moved to Hanstholm after a new harbour opened there in 1967. The old landing site is still here, and Vorupør is now catering to recreational fishing, including fishing trips to the North Sea. Tourism seems the main driver of the local economy nowadays, and you can find several hotels, eateries, and shops here, and as at Klitmøller, watersports are popular in the summer.

Visitor centre at the old landing site of Stenbjerg, south of Vorupør. It is the smallest visitor centre in Thy National Park, but it is staffed with volunteers in the summer, ready to help with tips, maps, stories, and brochures. You can also buy ice cream and coffee here. Walk the beaches or hike a 6.2 km local roundtrip trail. All commercial fishing in Stenbjerg has moved to Hanstholm many years ago, but the entire settlement has been preserved, and now serves as an interesting authentic museum for former times fishing culture. A coastal village and popular surf and watersports site. As most other spots on the North Sea coast, it started out as a fishing settlement, but is now exclusively geared towards tourists and watersports. Recreational fishing is popular though. Klitmøller is about twice the size of Vorupør and swells with holidaymakers in the summer. Many summer houses, several eateries, and some shops.

Coastal village where the Limfjord meets the North Sea. Agger started out as a fishing settlement, and the fishing harbour is still active, landing fresh oysters from the Limfjord in particular. Nowadays, the town is more geared towards tourists in the summertime and has several hotels. It is located in the southern end of Thy National Park and here you will find Svanholmhus, the visitor centre for Agger Tange, a unique bird site.

Note that a larger part of the spit is closed for the public from 1st April to 15th July, when the birds are breeding, and about half of the area is a permanent no-go zone. Bring binoculars for the best experience. Svanholmhus is located at the far end of the Agger Tange spit, at the ferry harbour servicing Thyborøn on the other side of the canal. The centre is open year round, closing every day when the last ferry departs. Parking lot, fresh water, and public toilets. Free.  (updated Sep 2026)
• 56.82348.263183 Lobjerg Lighthouse, Lodbjergvej 33, Vestervig (drive directly to the lighthouse, or hike north from Agger, around the Flade Sø lake on the coastal side). Every day 07:00-09:00, year round. Visitor centre a few kilometres north of Agger at the Lodbjerg Lighthouse in the middle of Thy National Park. Exceptional vistas across the park from the lighthouse. Bring cash to feed the ticket machines. In the summertime, you can buy coffee, cakes, and ice cream at the on-site café, or enjoy your own food at a picnic spot. Get tips and stories from the lighthouse volunteers on Weekends. At 11:30 (sharp), in the courtyard, they offers a free guided tour of the facility. Parking lots with charging station, fresh water, and public toilets .You are welcome to stay overnight in your own tent at this site. Several good hiking nature trails in the national park area here. The largest settlement at Thy National Park, with around 2,000 permanent residents, and an important fishing town in Denmark. Hanstholm is located at the northern end of Thy National Park and here you can find a visitor centre at the Hanstholm Lighthouse. There are several options for staying in Hanstholm, including camp sites, and the town has a large WWII bunker museum worth a visit. The waters around Hanstholm are not considered safe for swimming, but there are safe beach spots nearby.

The centre is unmanned and open every day, year round, just as the lighthouse. Parking lot with charging station, picnic area, fresh water, and public toilets. Access to the lighthouse cost kr 35 (free for children) and the views from the top are magnificent. There is also a small permanent art gallery and sometimes events. Because of the birdlife in the nature protection, some areas are illegal to enter from 1st of April to 15th of July when the birds are nesting. While the beaches are not restricted, do look out for ground nests everywhere during these months as well, as they are well camouflaged. Smaller areas at the northern and southern extremities of the protection are permanent no-go zones year round, only to be watched from a distance. Check this map, and seek more information at the staffed visitor centre in Vorupør.

Always keep your dog on a leash, or better yet: visit without your pets.

The national park can be experienced on foot or on a bicycle. There are also several access points for cars, and all visitor centres have parking lots.

If you have a specific interest in birds, the areas around Agger in the south and the area between Klitmøller and Hanstholm in the north is the most interesting, and you will find birdwatching towers and more detailed information there. Spring and autumn are the most active times for birds around here, but not exclusively. It might also be good to know that the wetland area of Vejlerne, in the region of Han Herred north of Thy, is part of the largest bird protection in Northern Europe and possibly the most interesting bird site you can find in Denmark.

In Thy National Park, Dunlin is the most abundant bird and you can experience enormous flocks when they arrive in early spring from the southern coasts of Western Europe to feed and breed here in the summer. They depart in autumn and at this time, Whooper Swan flocks arrives from Russia, and the rest of the Nordic countries (including a few from Iceland), to overwinter and forage. They migrate back in early spring to breed and are difficult to miss due to their noticable melancholic song. Eurasian Spoonbill is one of the more exotic migratory birds, as Denmark hosts the northernmost population of this particular species. They arrive in late spring from the Tropics (Northwestern Africa primarily) to forage around the reedbeds and returns in late summer to breed. Other interesting birds include many waders, seabirds, and birds of prey, such as Northern Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Arctic Tern, large flocks of Greylag Goose, dancing Cranes, the evasive nocturnal Nightjar, the day-hunting Short-eared Owl, and White-tailed Eagle among many more.

In addition to the five visitor centres, there are several noteworthy vantage points in Thy National Park. Bring your own binocular.

This is probably the best option to experience the cranes in Thy National Park, when they breed and dance in April, or in the autumn when they gather in flocks to migrate south to Spain or France. Also other wildlife here, including red deer in late summer. Reach the tower on foot by a 2 km hike from the parking and picnic area north from here. The highest hill in the national park overlooking the heathland in the northern parts, with several good vantage points in the nearby area. As the central parts of the heathland here are closed permanently, Isbjerg is among the best spots to experience this part of Thy National Park, but stick to the trail, please. • 57.023448.55915 Vandet Sø, Klitmøllervej 61, Thisted. Observation platform at the Vandet Sø lake. Combine with a swim, a hike, or a mountainbike ride in the woods. Parking lot, picnic tables, and bathing pier. There is an outdoor playground and a dog forest just north of here. Check out the adjacent winery Bleghule Vingård for a unique and very local experience.  (updated Sep 2026)

• 56.955428.421936 Ålvand watchtower (hike, bike, or drive to the tower from the west or the east by the gravel road). Watch cranes, geese, red deer, or (if you are in luck) otters from this place. The landscape of heath, bogs, and woods is beautiful and interesting, but stick to the gravel road. If you want hikes, go to the Tvorup Plantation just north of here, it also includes a mountainbike trail. The Ålvand dune heath is closed off from 1st April to 15th July, to protect breeding birds.  (updated Sep 2026)

Dyrenes Paradis means 'Paradise of Animals' and this bike route provides plenty of opportunity for interesting bird watching. It starts off from Nørre Vorupør at the national park visitor center and comes back after a 42 km roundtrip.  (updated Sep 2026)

If you are visiting the Thy National Park area for more than a day or two, it is important to know where to stock up on groceries, especially if you are camping. It might also be useful to know where to charge or refuel your motor vehicle.

You can also find two supermarkets in Hanstholm, as well as charging stations and fossil fuels. There are also a few small grocery stores in the countryside east of the national park area. Thisted, though, is by far the best option for shopping with the most diversity.

You can find several eateries and restaurants in the four towns of Hanstholm, Klitmøller, Vorupør, and Agger.

You can find free fresh water at the visitor centres and at the observation points around the park area.

Hanstholm has several options for accommodation, including hotels and camp sites, but you can also find accommodation in Klitmøller, Vorupør, and Agger, as listed below. If you do your own research, you might find a vacant summerhouse for rent around those settlements as well. Watch out for snakes (Northern Viper) in the heathlands. However, they are neither abundant nor aggressive, and if you stick to the trails, are observant, or wear boots and long trousers, you will be completely safe. In case you get bitten, it is good to know that only 10-15% of bites lead to serious complications, but call the emergency line in any case. Don't touch the bite area, don't move around, and remain as calm as possible. Children, weak, or allergic people are the most vulnerable.
