Mukungarh

Mukundgarh is one of several villages in the Shekhawati region, once known for the merchant families who left for larger cities in search of business, leaving many settlements sparsely populated. These merchants rarely forgot their hometowns, however, and sent back substantial wealth to build ornately painted havelis (mansions), along with schools and colleges. Many of these havelis still stand today, their frescoed walls retaining much of their original charm.

Like the rest of Shekhawati, Mukundgarh is best visited between October and March, when daytime temperatures are mild. Summers (April-June) are extremely hot and best avoided, and the monsoon (July-September) brings humidity and occasional flooding on rural roads.

While Hindi and the local Shekhawati dialect are most commonly spoken, many locals especially those involved in tourism - know basic English. Visitors are generally welcomed warmly, and people are often happy to help travellers with directions or recommendations, even across a language gap.

Mukundgarh lies roughly 150 km northwest of Jaipur, between the towns of Nawalgarh and Jhunjhunu. There is no direct rail link from major cities, but a branch line connects Mukundgarh to Jaipur via Sikar, with a small station (Dundlod-Mukundgarh) served by a few daily passenger trains.

Over 45-54 daily bus services run between Jaipur and the Shekhawati region via RSRTC (state transport) and private operators, with fares starting around ₹202. Options include AC and non-AC seater, sleeper, semi-sleeper, and Volvo buses. Major boarding points in Jaipur include Sindhi Camp, Polo Victory, Narayan Singh Circle, and Chumu Puliya. Private taxis from Jaipur are also a convenient option for travellers short on time.
