Mundaka

Mundaka is a town in the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country of northern Spain. It is famous for its specific wave.

Parking is scarce around the inner city. Beware also that many parking slots are marked for residents only.

Take the A3515 line of Bizkaibus (Bilbao-Amorebieta/Etxano-Gernika-Bermeo) from Bilbao.

It takes one hour by car to arrive in Mundaka from San Sebastian by highway A-8, which connects San Sebastian and Bilbao and BI-635 from Amorebieta.

Mundaka is a stop on Euskotren's Bilbao-Bermeo railway line. There is a Euskotren train connection from Bilbao's Zappikaleak (Casco Viejo) station on line E4 departing every 30 minutes on weekdays & hourly at weekends with a journey time of around 75 minutes.

The port is located in the central part of the town with medieval fisherman houses facing the sea.

• 43.407433-2.6977472 Casino de Mundaka, Kepa Deunaren Kalea 1. 100-year-old building with view to the sea operated by the Mundaka fraternity society. The restaurant inside gets mixed reviews.  

Further away:

• 43.447-2.7853 San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (There are two routes, both with checkpoints - either via steps directly from the nearby parking, or via a far less crowded walk way eastwards.). A picturesque hermitage on an island, connected by a man-made bridge. Famous especially after Game of Thrones starred it. The hermitage itself is closed most of the year. "Gaztelugatxe" translates roughly to "Rock castle" Booking is mandatory especially during the high season, because only 1462 people are allowed to visit daily - so it's likely sold out for weeks upfront. There are no access checks outside the opening hours, however it's not officially legal to enter without a ticket nevertheless. No ticket is needed outside the peak days.  

Mundaka is a world-renowned surf spot. One has to be careful considering the currents. If you don't know, ask the locals first at the nearby surf school. The wave can grow up to 4m and rise for 400m. The left wave is among the best of Europe.
