Muros
Muros is a town on the coast of Galicia in northwest Spain. With a population of 8200 in 2024, it's the largest of a string of fishing villages along this coast, with Serres to the north and Louro to the south. It's nowadays a relaxing beach resort.
Get in
[edit]By road from Santiago go west on AG-56 towards Noia then follow AC-550 along the north shore of the ria.
Monbus runs hourly from Santiago de Compostela, taking 1 hr 45 min via Noia and the other north shore villages.
Get around
[edit]Town is small and walkable, but you need wheels to explore the nearby villages.
Taxis wait near the port.

[edit]- 1 Porto de Muros is the town's focus, with a mix of leisure and fishing small craft.
- Nosa Señora das Angustias is a 14th century Gothic church at Rúa Hospital 16D. The interior resembles an upturned boat.
- San Pedro church is 100 m south of the port at Rúa Rosalía de Castro 25. It's 12th century. The tower, which you can climb, was destroyed in the Napoleonic wars but re-built.

- 2 Santuario Virxe do Camiño is a 15th century church at the south end of Serres village.
- Ermida das Neves is an 18th century chapel on the hill above the sanctuary.
- Pozo do Cachón in Serres is a 19th century watermill powered by tidal flow. It's closed in 2025.
- 3 Laxe das Rodas are petroglyphs, prehistoric rock art. These are Bronze Age circular and spiral engravings.
- 4 San Francisco Convent is 1 km east of Louro.
- 5 Monte Louro is a hill of 241 m at the headland where the ría meets the open Atlantic.
- 6 Hórreo de Lira is in Lira village. Hórreos are a type of grain store peculiar to northwest Iberia, long thin structures on pillars to protect the grain from rats and water. This is the world's longest, at 35 m.
- Santa María de Lira 50 m north of the Hórreo is a church built in 1760 and enlarged in 1825. It's usually open on Mondays.

- Beaches: Praia do Castelo is a small triangle south side of Muros harbour. The water is sheltered and shallow.
- Praia Rocha is a 300 m strip near the Sanctuary.
- Beaches west of the headland are exposed to the Atlantic and better for surfing. The longest is Carnota.
- Golf: no full courses nearby. There's a pitch and putt at Barbanza south of Noia.
Buy
[edit]- Gadis supermarket is on Rúa Cabo just south of the port, open M-Sa 09:30-14:00, 17:00-20:30.
- Town market is held on Praza de Abastos M-Sa 09:00-14:00.
Eat
[edit]A dozen places cluster around the port. 200 m north, if you must, is Hamburguesería MacBurger, open W-M 13:00-23:00.
Drink
[edit]- Pubs are south side of the port and serve tapas.
- Galician wine is white and crisp like Portuguese.

Connect
[edit]As of Feb 2025, Muros and its approach roads have 5G from Masmovil, Movistar and Orange, but only a scratchy basic signal from Vodafone.
