Nanka

Nanka is a town in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State in South East Nigeria.

The town is bordered by Agulu to the north and alongside Igboukwu.

Nanka is one of the sixteen communities that form the Orumba North Local Government Area. Its history is rooted in the pre-colonial era of the Igbo people. The town is composed of seven villages, which are Agbiligba, Enugwu-Nanka, Ifite, Amako, Umudala, Ubaha, and Eti.It has a traditional administrative setup overseen by the Nwadunu lineage, with the current Nwadunu being the ninth in the line.

During the period of human trafficking, Eke-Ntai in Amako village was a well-known slave market. The community's economic activities include trading, farming (now largely subsistence due to soil erosion), palm wine tapping, and basket-making.Nanka is severely affected by gully erosion, which has led to significant damage to land and property and has even cut off villages. Efforts have been made by the community, through organizations like the Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU), to combat this issue.

Nanka has a humid tropical zone (Anambra State), experiences a climate with distinct wet (March-Oct) and dry (Nov-Feb) seasons, bimodal rainfall, high humidity, and warm temperatures averaging around 24-27°C, with significant rainfall (1400-2500mm) and intense storms during the rainy period, characteristic of West Africa's tropical environment.

Visitors can come to the town through plane and bus.

Visitors wishing to access Nanka by air have to make use of the nearest airport to Awka which is Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport (IATA: ABB, ICAO: DNAS). The airport handles domestic services connecting the city to Nigeria's major metropolitan centres. The distance between Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport to Nanka is a 30 minutes drive.

While Nanka does not host a major commercial bus terminal, travelers coming from the state capital can board an EUMT shuttle at the Awka Terminal heading directly towards its neighboring town, Ekwulobia. Passengers can inform the driver to drop them off along the main highway at popular Nanka junctions like Afor Nanka or Agulu-Nanka border, from where local tricycles (Keke) provide final-mile transit into the travellers villages. ₦2,500-₦4,000.  (updated Aug 2026)

People within the town move within the town axis through buses, tricycles, private cars and also by trekking.

• Ifite day which brings all the women from the communities in Nanka to dance and compete with each other,this celebration is also honored by the presence of the king and it is held at Nwa Agu town.

The Afọr udo market which opens on the Afọr market day displays everything neede and wanted on the home both utensils electrical appliances, beverages, and food stuffs are all available and are bought in Nanka market

Aniga is a very nitricious meal prepared feom cocoyam, in most occasions it is eaten and it is sometimes prepared for expected visitors.

The Ofu-Obu Hospital is run by the Anambra State government. It is listed among the Nigerian Maternal and Child Health Care centres in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
