Nekede is a town in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, southeastern Nigeria. It forms part of the wider Owerri urban area and is known for the Federal Polytechnic.

History
[edit | edit source]Nekede is one of the fifteen communities that form the Owerri West Local Government Area. The town is composed of three villages, which are Umualum, Umudibia, and Umuoma. These three villages are traditionally bound together by shared history and native customs.
Nekede changed forever in 1978 when a technical college opened on its land. In 1993, this school became the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, bringing in thousands of students and turning the town into a busy university hub. The town's history is also tied to its water, as Nekede sits where the Nworie River meets the Otamiri River. In Igbo tradition, the Otamiri River is named after a powerful water deity believed to protect the town and punish evil-doers. These rivers served as natural borders, trade routes, and fishing grounds for early settlers, and they remain the most important geographic landmarks in Nekede today.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Nekede features a tropical savanna climate, characterized by high humidity, a prolonged wet season, and a short but distinct dry season. Temperatures remain uniformly warm to hot throughout the year, with a mean annual temperature hovering around 26.4°C. The rainy season brings heavy downpours, while the dry season are accompanied by the dusty harmattan wind, making the period between late November and early February the most comfortable time for visitors.

[edit | edit source]Travellers coming from Owerri Municipal can easily take a local commercial tricycle (popularly called Keke) or a mini-bus from the major Douglas Road axis directly to Nekede.
By plane
[edit | edit source]Travellers coming from outside the state, the nearest flight hub is the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, from where you can charter a taxi straight to Nekede.
