Nieuwegein

Nieuwegein (population 68,000) is a city in Utrecht province in the Netherlands, about 5 km south of Utrecht and just north of the river Lek. Most of Nieuwegein was built as a planned city since the 1970s but it does have its pretty sides, too.

Despite its sizable population, Nieuwegein can essentially be considered a suburb of Utrecht. It was founded in 1971 mainly to accommodate Utrecht's rapidly growing population. The city was developed around the older villages of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, whose character has been at least partly preserved. Therefore, somewhat unusually for a planned city, Nieuwegein still features around 100 listed monuments.

Nieuwegein is bounded by three motorways, the A2, A12 and A27, which all have a (different) exit named Nieuwegein. The exits Utrecht-Lunetten and Utrecht-Zuid on the A12 and Nieuwegein Zuid on the A2 also serve the city. All these motorways can get quite congested during rush hour.

Nieuwegein does not have a train station and instead relies on Utrecht for connections to the rest of the country. There are frequent connections to Utrecht's main station, Utrecht Centraal, either by tram (lines 20 and 21) or bus (65, 66, 74, 77). All these buses serve slightly different routes within Nieuwegein, so make sure to double-check where exactly the bus is going when you board it at Utrecht Centraal.

Tram line 21 continues to IJsselstein and bus line 48 connects Nieuwegein with the smaller train stations in Houten and Maarssen. There is also a small ferry (pedestrians/cyclists €1.25/€1.75) across the river Lek to Vianen. Most other destinations are best reached with a change in Utrecht or by car or bike.

Many amenities are within short walking distance from the Nieuwegein City tram stop, but otherwise distances within the city can be quite long. One of the aforementioned bus or tram lines might provide a connection, otherwise use a bike or car.

• In the historic center of Vreeswijk (Dorpstraat/Oude Sluis), it is pleasant to walk along the canals, locks and cafés.
• Park Oudegein. Park close to the (modern-day) city centre. (updated Jul 2026)
• Poldermolen Oudegein, W and Su 13:00–17:00 (in Park Oudegein). Windmill built in 1667, working again since 2021. Run by volunteers. Can be visited when it's running, marked by a blue pennant outside (possibly also outside of the regular opening hours). (updated Jul 2026)

• Down Under. Activities such as wakeboarding and water skiing on a lake, or surfing on an indoor wave (updated Jul 2026)
• Skipiste Nieuwegein. Five dry ski slopes on an artificial hill. Local kids learn to ski here, but adults are allowed, too. (updated Jul 2026)

• Winkelcentrum Cityplaza. Mon 12:00–18:00, Tue–Sat 10:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–17:00. A large shopping mall, essentially Nieuwegein's high street. Also has several supermarkets, some of which are open until 21:00. (updated Jul 2026)

A growing number of food options can be found in and around Cityplaza, but there are some hidden gems to be found around town, especially in the older neighbourhoods of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk.

• Jack's Grillhouse (in Park Oudegein). Famous for its all-you-can-eat meat menu, but perhaps surprisingly also has several vegetarian options. Mains €15–25. (updated Jul 2026)
