Nordfjordeid is a village of about 3,200 people at the head of Eidsfjorden, an inner arm of Nordfjord. It is the administrative centre of Stad municipality, the home of the Norwegian fjord horse, and a cruise port, with a Viking ship replica, an old wooden shopping street and hiking trails straight from the village.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Nordfjordeid lies in a green valley between the fjord and Hornindalsvatnet, Europe's deepest lake. The village has strong ties to the fjord horse: the national fjord horse centre is here, and stallion shows have been held in the village since 1886. In 1874 the remains of a large Viking ship were found in a burial mound at Myklebust; a full-size replica, the Myklebust ship, has been on display at the Sagastad Viking centre since 2019.
The village is small and easy to walk around. Cruise ships call from spring to autumn, and on ship days the centre is noticeably busier.
