Northern Bundelkhand

Northern Bundelkhand (Hindi: बुंदेलखंड Bundelkhaṇḍ), the southwestern region of Uttar Pradesh, India, is a part of the historical Bundelkhand region shared with Madhya Pradesh.

Bundelkhand (boon-DAYL-k^huhnndd) is a geographic and cultural region, distinguished from the Indo-Gangetic Plain to the north by its gentle hills.

The Chandelas were a powerful dynasty in Central India, ruling from the 9th to the 12th century. Although they are best known for constructing the temples of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, they ruled over the Uttar Pradesh section of Bundelkhand too.

The Bundela Rajput dynasty emerged here by the 14th century, and the region was named "Bundelkhand" after them. They later submitted to the Mughal Empire while keeping their autonomy. From that point onwards, they kept expanding east into the 19th century. Although it was officially the land of Bundela Rajputs, stronger Bundela clans dominated the east, leaving lesser Rajput clans more independent. After Aurangzeb's death in 1707, the Bundelas renounced the authority of the Mughal Empire.

The UP section of Bundelkhand is best known for Jhansi and its close association with the mutiny of Rani Lakshmibai during the 1857 rebellion. While Jhansi became a part of the United Provinces and hence Uttar Pradesh, the surrounding princely states in Bundelkhand became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1950.

The Bundelkhand Expressway, inaugurated in July 2022, connects Etawah to Chitrakoot at 296 km (184 mi).
