Obuasi is a mining town situated in the Ashanti-Kwahu region of Ghana, some 60 km south of Kumasi.

Understand
[edit | edit source]Obuasi is the capital of Obuasi Municipal District. The town is one of Ghana's best-known mining centres and has a long history associated with gold mining. Obuasi developed around one of the country's richest gold deposits. Gold mining has played a major role in the growth of the town and continues to influence its economy, employment and surrounding communities.
The town is surrounded by a tropical landscape of forests, farms and small settlements. Agriculture is also practised in the surrounding area, with crops such as plantain, cassava, cocoa and vegetables being cultivated.
Obuasi has a predominantly Akan cultural character, with Twi widely spoken. English is used for official communication, education and business.

[edit | edit source]Obuasi has a warm and humid tropical climate. The area receives relatively high rainfall, which supports its lush vegetation and agricultural activities.
Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, while the rainy periods can be particularly humid.

[edit | edit source]Obuasi is connected by road with Kumasi, Accra and other towns in the Ashanti Region. Road transport is the main way of reaching the town.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Buses, minibuses and shared taxis operate from surrounding towns. Services from Kumasi are particularly common.

[edit | edit source]Taxis, shared taxis, minibuses and motorcycles are commonly used for transportation within Obuasi and nearby communities. The central parts of the town can also be explored on foot.

[edit | edit source]The town has a world class golf course which was originally the stomping ground of a few privileged ex-pats. The golf course has its own unique character, with obstacles such as goats and locals doing their weekly washing in the creek that runs through the course.
