Obudu

Obudu is a local government area in Cross River State in South South Nigeria.

This area became really popular because of Obudu Cattle Ranch. It shares boundary with Benue State to the north and Cameroon to the east.

You can reach Obudu from either Calabar which takes approximately 6 hours by road or by passing Gboko, Benue State. The town area is accessible only via road.

It is about 110 km (68 mi) east of Ogoja township, and is about 332 kilometres (206 mi) from Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The closest international airport is in Calabar where you can book your flight if coming from Lagos or Abuja, and afterwards take a car or bus to the resort.

Alternatively, there is an airstrip called Bebi Airstrip that also serves the Obudu Mountain Resort. Its runway is 18 km east of Obudu. The airstrip primarily serves as the aviation gateway to the Obudu Ranch resort.

Bus is the most preferred means of transportation if you are going somewhere far in the community. Although it takes a longer time to get a bus, you would definitely get one.

This is the most common means of transportation in this community. You can take a motorcycle to almost anywhere in the community although it's not really advisable for long distance journey.

• 6.3666679.3666671 Obudu Cattle Ranch (about 30 minutes drive from Obudu town). It is located on the Oshie Ridge of the Sankwala Mountain Range at about approximately 1600 m above sea level. It is the most popular destination in the south-south region for tourists in Nigeria. Although the area is normally cold, the views are nice. It is surrounded by undulating mountain ranges, low hanging clouds and thick dense canopy forests. There are several places in this ranch you can visit. There is a canopy walk and a grotto. The cattle ranch was created in 1951 by a Scottish explorer who explored the mountain ranges and camped on the Oshie Ridge mountaintop of the Sankwala Mountains in 1949. A taxi from Calabar costs ₦6,000-7,000 (2022) whilst a regular taxi from Obudu township to the ranch costs ₦1000-2000.  (updated Dec 2021)

• Obudu Dam (Locally situated downstream in the lower valley basin.). A major water reservoir providing critical utility to the surrounding local government areas. It provides a peaceful, quiet view of the local engineering structure and lowland water basin, though it is prone to acute seasonal drops in depth during the peak of the dry season. Free.

Originally established in 1951 by a Scottish explorer, this expansive, high-altitude highland resort rests on the Obudu Plateau at 1,600 m (5,249 ft) above sea level. Noted for its uniquely temperate, cold alpine climate, rolling green hills, and low-hanging mist, it functions as a premier eco-tourism destination. The resort area hosts several natural and recreational sub-attractions. ₦1,000–₦5,000 entry fee for day visitors.  

• 6.385879.374643 Becheve Nature Reserve, Obudu Mountain Resort Plateau (Located directly within the upper resort complex grounds.). 7AM–6PM daily. A heavily preserved, pristine rainforest reserve managed in collaboration with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF). It features unique high-altitude tree species, a specialized observation platform perfect for endemic bird-watching, and a dense forest floor where travelers frequently spot mona monkeys swinging through the canopy. Included with ranch entry / guided fees apply.  

• Holy Mountain and Cameroon Border Viewpoint (Angel's View), Obudu Plateau Peaks (Accessible via guided hiking trails or a short mountain-drive from the main chalets.). Best visited at sunrise or early morning. The highest geographical peak on the ranch layout, offering expansive, panoramic views that stretch clean across the international border into neighboring Cameroon. Often completely blanketed in thick white clouds by midday, it provides a dramatic cliffside lookout nicknamed "Angel's View". Free with guide. 

• Bird watching
• Ride the cable car: When operational, take a ride on one of the longest cable car systems in Africa, which glides passengers from the tropical bottom valley station up to the temperate mountaintop resort complex.
• Grotto swimming: Swim in the crystal-clear, deep natural rock pools fed by mountain springs, complete with artificially integrated stone fountains and terraced relaxation decks.

Shopping in the Obudu region offers an authentic look into local agricultural trade and traditional handicraft. The lower valley markets are dominated by cheap, fresh farm produce, while specialized souvenirs can be sourced closer to the mountaintop communities.

• Obudu honey: Highly sought-after across Nigeria, this pure, unadulterated honey is harvested naturally from the wild mountain forests and local bee farms around the plateau. It has a distinctively rich, dark color and deep floral flavor.
• Seedless grapes & temperate fruits: Because of the unique high-altitude, cool alpine climate, the Obudu plateau is one of the only places in West Africa where temperate fruits like seedless grapes, strawberries, and specialized apples can be grown successfully and purchased fresh from local farmers.
• Highland garri: The local yellow and white garri (processed cassava grains) produced in the northern Cross River region is famous for its crisp texture and long shelf life.

A sprawling, energetic open-air community market. This is the absolute best and cheapest place to purchase massive quantities of local agricultural goods, including fresh yams, plantains, Obudu honey jars, local woven baskets, and traditional textiles. Bartering is expected. Budget.  
• 6.3879.3742 The Ranch Craft Shop (Becheve souvenir center), Resort Activity Center, Obudu Plateau (near the main resort reception desk and cable car station). Daily 8AM-6PM. A dedicated gift shop catering primarily to tourists. It stocks a wide array of locally hand-carved wooden sculptures, traditional mountain walking sticks, postcards, branded apparel, and packaged jars of authentic mountain honey. Prices are fixed. Moderate.  
• Becheve village fruit stalls, Ranch Rd, Becheve community (dotted along the main plateau road tracking through the mountaintop villages). Daylight hours. Small roadside wooden tables managed by local indigenous Becheve women. This is where you can buy freshly picked plateau fruits, locally harvested wild mushrooms, and traditional hand-woven winter beanies and sweaters to keep you warm in the mountain mist. Budget. 

The culinary scene in Obudu splits between traditional Cross River rainforest delicacies served in the lower valley town, and fresh dairy and continental cuisine available at the high-altitude resort. Cross River State is globally famous across Nigeria for its rich, highly nutritious vegetable soups.

• Afang soup: The signature dish of Cross River State, made from finely shredded wild Afang leaves (okazi) and waterleaf, heavily simmered with palm oil, periwinkles, stockfish, and assorted meats. It is traditionally eaten with pounded yam or fufu.
• Edikang-ikong: A premium, deeply nutritious vegetable soup prepared with a precise mix of pumpkin leaves and waterleaf, rich with smoked fish and cow skin (kanda).
• Fresh ranch dairy: Due to the high-altitude cattle ranching heritage of the plateau, fresh milk, unpasteurized butter, and locally processed cheeses are unique regional specialties available at the mountaintop settlements.

• Ranch grotto bar & grill, The grotto pool side, Obudu Plateau (next to the natural spring swimming pools). Daily 11AM-8PM. An open-air poolside spot serving spicy barbecued meats, grilled fish, pepper soup, and light finger foods to hikers relaxing after swimming in the natural spring pools. Moderate. 
• Calabar kitchen valley bukka, Ogoja-Obudu road, Ode-Obudu (in the lower valley commercial area near the main motor park). Daily 8AM-9PM. A very popular local eatery serving authentic, freshly prepared local dishes like Afang, Edikang-ikong, and white soup (Afia Efere) at local prices. Yams are pounded fresh throughout the afternoon. Budget. 

Drinking options in the Obudu region vary significantly by altitude. The lower valley town features a lively, open-air nightlife scene centered around roadside bars, while the mountaintop resort offers cozy, indoor hotel lounges and poolside spots designed to ward off the chilly evening air.

• Fresh palm wine: Tapped daily from the palm trees in the lower tropical valley plains. It is sweet and low in alcohol when fresh in the morning, becoming stronger and more fermented by evening. It is traditionally served in calabashes.
• Zobo: A popular, refreshing non-alcoholic crimson beverage brewed from dried roselle leaves (hibiscus), ginger, and garlic, sweetened with natural fruit juices. It is widely available at local markets in the valley town.
• Kunun Aya:
  • A creamy, highly refreshing northern-influenced drink made from blended tiger nuts, dates, and coconut, served ice-cold.

A cozy, dimly lit indoor lounge featuring a large fireplace to protect guests from the freezing mountaintop night fog. • The Grotto poolside bar, The Natural Spring Pool Area, Obudu Plateau (beside the natural stone waterfall pools). Daily 10AM-9PM. An excellent spot to enjoy an ice-cold beer, palm wine, or carbonated soft drink after a long day of hiking the Becheve Nature Reserve trails. Moderate. 
• Ranch gate sunset bar, Ranch road base gate, Ode-Obudu (at the bottom of the mountain, right before the checkpoint to ascend the intestinal road). Daily 4PM-2AM. A lively, open-air local spot where travelers and drivers gather to relax before or after the long mountain drive. Features high-volume Afrobeat music, cheap local beers (like Star, 33 Export, and trophy), and fresh catfish pepper soup. Budget. 

There are several hotels in Obudu. In case you are visiting the ranch, there are some cabins over there and also village huts; they are expensive though.
