Oponguio

Oponguio is a small Purhepecha village on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. It is the site of a modern mezcal distillery.

The maguey is collect by jimadors using their razor sharp blades then the heart is transported on horse back to the distillery where it is roasted in a pit to convert the starches into sugars. All product is distilled using a traditional still. They have several types of mezcal to taste or buy.
