Oyano



Ōyano (大矢野) is an island in Kumamoto prefecture, part of Kamiamakusa City.

It takes about 1½ hours by car. If you take JR, you can get on a train at 5 platform in Kumamoto station.

  • Amakusa Shiro Memorial Hall, 977- 1 Oyanomachinaka, Kami-Amakusa. 09:00 – 17:00 (closed at 16:35 during summer and 16:20 during winter). Exhibits about the Shimabara Rebellion. Amakusa Shiro was responsible for leading the rebellion against the Tokugawa Shogunate. The museum has 13 exhibits that tell the story of Christianity in Japan from its arrival in 1549 to its suppression. Adults ¥600, Junior High school students and younger ¥300, infants and toddlers free.
