Understand

[edit | edit source]

The population was 19,000 in 2020. The name Pirapora comes from the Tupi language.

Pirapora do Bom Jesus developed around the religious devotion to an image of Jesus that, according to local tradition, was found in the Tietê River in the 18th century. The discovery became the foundation of the town's religious tradition and led to the construction of the Sanctuary of the Senhor Bom Jesus.

The municipality is relatively small and has a historic centre centred around the sanctuary and the Tietê River. Tourism is strongly connected with religious pilgrimage, particularly on weekends and during religious celebrations.

The surrounding landscape includes hills, forested areas and the Tietê River. Its proximity to São Paulo makes it accessible as a short trip from the metropolitan area.
