Portland

There is more than one place called Portland:

  • Portland (Victoria) – in Victoria (state) as the oldest European settlment in the state. It is also the largest urban centre of Shire of Glenelg, north of Portland Bay. Portland and Portland Bay was named by British navigator James Grant in honour of the Duke of Portland in 1800.
  • Portland (New South Wales) – is a town of 2,424 inhabitants (2016 census) in New South Wales. It is named after Australia's first cement works.
  • Portland (Arkansas)  - an agricultural town of 325 (as of 2020) in Ashley County, in the southeastern part of Arkansas.
  • Portland (Connecticut)  - a town of 9,384 (as of 2020) in Middlesex County. It is part of the Lower Connecticut River Planning Region 17 mi (27 km) south of Hartford, and on the opposite side of the Connecticut River from Middletown.
  • Portland (Indiana)  - a city/town of 6,320 (as of 2020), 95 mi (153 km) northeast of Indianapolis near the Ohio state line. It was platted in 1837 and named after Portland, Maine which now serves as the county seat of Jay County.
  • Portland (Maine) – a city in New England, Portland is the largest city of Maine. It was formally established in 1786 and named after the Isle of Portland in Great Britain. In turn, other cities and towns of the same name in the United States are named after Portland, Maine.
  • Portland (Michigan) – a city in Michigan on the confluence of the Grand and Looking Glass River in the southern part of the Portland Township in Ionia County. It is located between Grand Rapids and Lansing.
  • Portland (Oregon) – a city in the Pacific Northwest, the largest city in Oregon named after Portland, Maine at a coin toss between two prominent founders in 1844.
  • Portland (Texas) – a suburban city along the north shores of Corpus Cristi Bay and Nueces Bay. It is across the bay from Corpus Christi in San Patricio County with some parts of the city in Nueces County.
