Pulilan is a municipality (or town) in Bulacan, Philippines. It is famed for its annual Carabao Festival.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Like many towns in Central Luzon, Pulilan started out as an agricultural town at the edge of Candaba Swamp along the Angat River with a nondescript history apart from a few peasant revolts. It is bounded by Baliwag to the northeast, Plaridel to the south and southeast, and Calumpit to the west. The town of Apalit in the province of Pampanga lies to the north of it. It is home to about 111,000 people (census, 1 July 2024) 
The locals are called "Pulileño" (male) or "Pulileña" (female).
Get in
[edit | edit source]Pulilan is accessible via the following roads:
- North Luzon Expressway or NLEX (through Exit 45 or Pulilan Exit). From here, head eastward to go to the center of the town via Pulilan Regional Road.
- Pan-Philippine Highway (between Baliuag and Plaridel). From NLEX, go through Exit 38 or Santa Rita Exit in Guiguinto to access this road and continue until the intersection with the Pulilan Regional Road then head west.
The Pulilan Regional Road (or Calumpit–Pulilan Road) connects the neighboring town of Calumpit in the west to Pulilan. It passes through the "bayan" (downtown) area and ends at its junction with the Pan-Philippine Highway, distinguished by a branch of Jollibee, known locally as Jollibee-Crossing. Along the way, a bypass road beginning at the back of the Jollibee in downtown Pulilan (Jollibee-Bayan) leads to Apalit in Pampanga province. GY
The Pan-Philippine Highway bypasses downtown Pulilan to the west. Instead, travelers taking public transportation from Metro Manila disembark at the Jollibee-Crossing and take either tricycles or jeepneys from the Robinsons Supermarket across the street.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Pulilan is connected to Metro Manila by buses heading to Baliwag and Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija. All buses make stops at SM Pulilan, where transfers by tricycle can be made to the downtown.
Get around
[edit | edit source]Going around this town is possible via jeepneys, tricycles, and even buses. However, most jeepneys, except for those traveling between Pulilan and Calumpit, bypass downtown Pulilan, necessitating a transfer at Robinsons Pulilan Junction.

Museum: 7AM-10AM, 4PM-8PM Sun. This is where the carabaos during the feast are made to kneel as tribute to their patron saint, St. Isidore the Laborer. This is a 19th-century baroque church located at the Kabayanan or the downtown area (Poblacion). It is also a famous pilgrimage site in Bulacan during the Holy Week or "Kuaresma". The Museo San Ysidro Labrador with its ecclesiastical collection is also situated here.
- 2 Casanova-Aguirre Ancestral House, Pulilan Regional Road, Poblacion. A well-preserved house built in 1927 and used as a setting for several films.
- 3 Casa San Francisco (Laxamana House), San Francisco Street, Poblacion. A house built in 1929 that was converted into an events venue.
- 4 Aguirre Centennial House (Cruz-Andan House), San Francisco Street, Poblacion. A 1920's house inside the Butterfly Haven Resort, which has a butterfly garden.
- 5 Casa Balbina, Old Cagayan Valley Road, Taal. A private residence built in 1910 that has the largest veranda in Pulilan.
- 6 Adriano Salvador Heritage House, Pulilan Regional Road, Poblacion. Dubbed as the "Malacañang of Pulilan", in 1908 this historical house served as the joint municipal seat of government of the two adjoining towns of Quingua (Plaridel) and Pulilan.

An 7 hectares (17 acres) ecotourism site promoting rural culture, although the view is somewhat spoiled by the presence of industrial warehouses nearby. The complex has a reconstructed colonial-era mansion containing a museum about farm life and temporary exhibitions of folk art.
Events

- Carabao Festival. every 14th and 15th of May. This festival is celebrated annually. Pulileños celebrate the feast in honor of their saint by parading carabaos (water buffaloes) and making them kneel in front of the church as a sign of respect to Saint Isidore Labrador, patron saint of farmers. Also included in the parade are cows, horses, street folk dancers, marching bands and floats of commercial establishments of the town.

[edit | edit source]A low-lying town, Pulilan is susceptible to flooding from its rivers during the rainy season, which is exacerbated by typhoons and the release of water from the Angat, Ipo and Bustos Dams upstream.
