
North Pune is the northern part of the metropolis, including the satellite city of Pimpri-Chinchwad (PCMC). The area is known for its automotive, IT and manufacturing industries.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Alandi. The resting place of the 13th century Marathi saint Sant Dnyaneshwar. His devotees believe that he is still alive. A temple complex was built at Dnyaneshwar's samadhi and is visited by pilgrims, especially those of the Varkari sect.
- 2 Ghorawadi Caves (Ghoradeshwar Caves, Shelarwadi Caves). A cave with carvings and statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities.
- 3 Savitribai Phule Pune University (Pune University), Ganeshkhind Rd, Ganeshkhind, ☏ +91 20 2569 0062. The site of Pune University was the official residence of the Governor of Bombay during the monsoon season. The campus features mansions built in Italian-Gothic style. A 300-m-high tower beckons to all these who come here in the pursuit of higher education. It is one of the oldest universities in India.
Forts
[edit | edit source]- 4 Indori Fort (Induri Fort; इन्दुरी किल्ला). A fort built by Sarsenapati Khandojirao Yesajirao Dabhade in 1720-21. The fort also has a mint building inside the fort which is in shambles. The entrance gate is in good condition. The fort has 9 bastions which are well connected by a fortification wall. The walls of the fort are 30–40 ft (9.1–12.2 m) high made of basalt rock with brickwork at the top. There is a temple of Kadjai inside the fort.

Museums

This historical landmark's architecture features Italian arches, salons, suites and spacious lawns. During the 1942 Quit India Movement, the British interned Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi here. The palace belonged to Aga Khan, prince and head of the Khoja sect, who later donated the palace to erect a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and his wife. Must see is an exhibition of very rare black-and-white photos and paintings from various epochs in the freedom movement, but descriptions are sparse so it helps if you already have background to the story. Also worth seeing is the Samadhi of Kasturba Gandhi in the backyard. ₹25 for Indians, ₹100 for foreigners. Extra for photos.
- 7 Chapekar Wada, ☏ +91 90112 40547, [email protected]. 9AM-7PM. The house of the Chapekar brothers, two Indian revolutionaries in the British period, now converted to a museum.
- 8 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum of Indian History, Wadgaon Shinde Rd (Can be reached by taxi or with bus 131). 9AM–6PM daily. The museum contains various exhibits on Indian history. It was founded by French author François Gautier. Free.
- 9 Pimpri Chinchwad Science Park, ☏ +91 20 2745 4050, [email protected]. 10AM-5PM (closed S). A science centre housing a museum, an art gallery, an auditorium, an amphitheatre and a planetarium. Adults: ₹50 for museum and ₹30 for shows. Children below 15: ₹30 for museum and ₹20 for shows.

- Japalouppe Equestrian Centre (Talegaon Dabhade), Somatne Ohata, Mumbai Pune highway, talegaon Dabhade, ☏ +91 9890920183. 6AM to 7PM. Punes Premier Riding school, Japalouppe is spread out over a picturesque 19 acres, with a team of 60 horses catering to a wide skill set of riders, from basic trotting and school work to advanced jumping and dressage.
- 1 Pune University Heritage Tour. 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month starts at 11 am. The curated walk takes visitors inside the main building complex, which was built in 1871 and served as the summer residence of the Governor of Bombay. Building was designed by James Trubshaw and was modeled in lines of Prince Albert’s Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, while the bell tower was inspired by Giotto’s Bell Tower in Florence, Italy. The interior consisted of a grand ballroom which has been converted into an auditorium. The dining room today serves as a seminar room. In spite of the adoptive reuse the interior is mostly kept unchanged and still contains the antique furniture and chandeliers. The building also houses a museum with exhibits from history, geology and anthropology. Weapons from the 19th-century Maratha armory are also on display.The most interesting part of the Pune University heritage tour is a 300-foot-long underground tunnel that once connected the kitchen. Note: The notice appears on the Savitribai Phule Pune University website on Friday and there is no need for a prior booking and participants can simply drop in at the venue at 11:00AM. Stadiums
[edit | edit source]- 2 Annasaheb Magar PCMC Stadium. A multipurpose stadium owned and managed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
- 3 Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (MCA Stadium), Gahunje. It hosts both one-day internationals and test matches with a seating capacity of 37,000 spectators. It serves as the home stadium for the Maharashtra cricket team, as well as the IPL team Pune Warriors.
- 4 PCMC Hockey Stadium (Major Dhyan Chand Stadium). A field hockey stadium.
