Renqiu (任丘; Rénqiū) is a county-level city in Cangzhou, Hebei, on the flat plains south of Beijing. The city grew around the Huabei Oilfield and remains more industrial than tourist-oriented. Renqiu itself has few major attractions, but it can be used as a base for exploring nearby towns and the eastern side of the Baiyangdian area.
Understand
[edit | edit source]The urban area is relatively flat and spread out, with residential districts, industrial facilities and agricultural land extending into the surrounding countryside. Villages and wetland areas are also common outside the built-up centre.
Renqiu's modern development has been strongly influenced by the Huabei Oilfield. The oil industry contributed to the expansion of the city and remains an important part of its local economy and identity.
For travellers, Renqiu is mainly useful as a regional base rather than as a destination with many major sights. Nearby rural areas and the Baiyangdian region provide a different landscape from the urban centre.
History
[edit | edit source]The Renqiu area has a long history of settlement, with archaeological sites in the surrounding plain dating back to the Neolithic period. For much of its history, the local economy was based mainly on agriculture, supported by the flat and fertile landscape of the North China Plain.
A major change came with the discovery of the Renqiu Oilfield in the 1970s. In 1975, the Ren-4 well produced a major commercial oil flow, and large-scale development followed in 1976. The growth of the Huabei Oilfield brought new industrial facilities, workers and residential districts to the area, accelerating the transformation of Renqiu from a predominantly agricultural county into an industrial city.
The oil industry has remained an important part of Renqiu's modern economy and urban development.

Climate
[edit | edit source]Renqiu has a temperate, semi-humid monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons and most of its rainfall concentrated in summer.
Spring, from March to May, brings rapidly rising temperatures, frequent winds, low humidity, and relatively little rainfall. Dry conditions are common across the open plain, and occasional dust carried by strong winds can reduce visibility.
Summer, from June to August, is hot, humid, and rainy. Most of the annual precipitation falls from mid-July to early September, often in the form of thunderstorms and short periods of heavy rain. High temperatures and humidity are common throughout the season.
Autumn, from September to November, is generally cooler and drier. Temperatures gradually fall, humidity decreases, and rainy weather becomes less frequent. Clear skies and mild temperatures make autumn a comfortable season for outdoor activities and day trips around Renqiu.
Winter, from December to February, is cold, dry, and often windy. Cold air from the northwest can cause sudden drops in temperature, and freezing conditions are common. Precipitation is limited, snowfall is usually light and short-lived, and sunny weather is frequent.
Overall, late spring to mid-autumn is generally the most comfortable period for visiting Renqiu and exploring the surrounding rural and wetland areas.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By plane
[edit | edit source]There is no civilian airport in Renqiu, and the closest commercial airport is Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX IATA), around 97 km away. There are several travel options: the most convenient choice is to take a G-series high-speed train from Renqiu West Station directly to Daxing Airport Station, which takes 37–40 minutes with a second-class fare of ¥40–60 (Oct 2026); the station connects straight to the airport terminal, and take care not to confuse it with the older Renqiu Station, roughly 7 km away. If you have heavy luggage or travel in a group, you may drive or take a taxi via the G45 Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway or G0322 Jingde Expressway, which takes about 1.5 hours under smooth traffic conditions with a highway toll of roughly ¥50; out-of-town registered vehicles need a Beijing entry permit and must follow local traffic restriction rules. You can also take a coach from Renqiu West Bus Station to Xiong’an High-speed Railway Station and transfer to another high-speed train for Daxing Airport, with a total journey time of around 2.5 hours including waiting time. Travellers on a tight budget with flexible schedules can take a conventional train from the old Renqiu Station to Beijing Fengtai Station, transfer to Line 10 subway and then the Daxing Airport Express to reach the airport; this route takes 2.5–3 hours and involves multiple transfers.
By train
[edit | edit source]1 Renqiu railway station (任丘站), Bohai East Road, Xinhua Road Subdistrict. Renqiu's main railway station is on the Beijing–Kowloon railway. Conventional trains connect Renqiu with Beijing and a number of cities in Hebei and other provinces. Check China Railway's official 12306 service for current schedules and tickets.
2 Renqiu West Railway Station (任丘西站). a station on the Xiongshangang high-speed railway. It opened on September 28, 2026, with a design speed of 350 km/h. High-speed trains run directly to Beijing, Xiong'an, Shangqiu, Hefei and other cities.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Renqiu Intercity Bus Station offers regular long-distance bus services connecting Renqiu to nearby major cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Baoding and Cangzhou. Buses are a convenient and affordable choice for travellers heading out of the city. Tickets can be bought at the station ticket window.
By car
[edit | edit source]Foreigners are allowed to rent vehicles while in China, although they need a Chinese driving license.
Renqiu has good road links with Beijing, Tianjin, Baoding and Cangzhou. The G45 Daqing–Guangzhou Expressway passes through the area and is useful for trips to nearby towns and the Baiyangdian region.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]Renqiu lies on the flat North China Plain, so cycling is a comfortable way to travel and explore. Bikes are available for rent locally.
- Urban leisure route This easy route connects Yanling Park, Renqiu Botanical Garden and Binhe Park. All parks are free of charge and have bike parking areas for rest. The botanical garden has a peony garden, which looks especially beautiful in spring and summer.
- Renqiu to Baiyangdian Ride south along National Highway 106 toward Baiyangdian Lake. You will pass wide reed marshes and wetland scenery. The round trip is about 20 km. It is suitable for riders with reasonable fitness.
- Fujia Circle route This roughly 20-kilometre route is popular among local cyclists. It has dedicated cycling paths and is good for relaxed rides.
Get around
[edit | edit source]
The city centre is flat, but Renqiu is quite spread out. Buses are useful for getting between the main urban districts, while taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used for short trips.
Local public buses cover most areas of central Renqiu. They are cheap for short trips within the city. Route signs are mostly in Chinese, so prepare a translation tool if you cannot read Chinese.
Public transport becomes less convenient once you leave the built-up area. For villages, rural sites and trips towards Baiyangdian, a taxi or private car is usually the better option.

For visitors, restaurants, karaoke venues and bars are concentrated in the central urban area, including Wanda Plaza, New Oasis Commercial Zone and North Railway Station area.
Sleep
[edit | edit source]Business hotels and chain hotels are easy to find in central Renqiu and around the railway station. These are the most practical areas to stay if you are only in the city for a night or two.

Foreign travellers should confirm that the hotel can register foreign guests before booking.
Stay safe

Take care when crossing roads, including at marked crossings, and do not expect all drivers to give way.
