Rhoose (/ruːs/ ROOSS; Welsh: Y Rhws [ə ˈr̥uːs], from y rhos 'the moor' is a village and community near the sea (the Bristol Channel) in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, near Barry. The wider community includes villages and settlements such as Font-y-Gary, Penmark, East Aberthaw and Porthkerry. The population of the community in 2011 was 6,160.

Rhoose is a rural and coastal village surrounded by farmland and countryside. Its location makes it a convenient base for travellers using Cardiff Airport and for visitors exploring the Vale of Glamorgan coast. The nearby coastline contains cliffs, beaches and scenic walking areas. The village is also close to several historic towns and attractions in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The village also has a holiday park (Fontygary Leisure Park), some shops, a library, two public houses (The Fontygary Inn and the Highwayman), Rhoose Social Club, and an active Surf Lifesaving Club (Rhoose Lifeguards) established in 1968.

History

[edit | edit source]

The original settlement was centred around three large farms located at what is now the eastern end of the village. Prior to the 20th century these farmhouses and their associated outbuilding formed the core of the hamlet. Due to the small size of the original settlement, little reliable information concerning its history is recorded. Although this area of South Wales was colonised by the Romans and there is evidence of settlements at Nurston, Penmark, Fonmon and East Aberthaw, there are no records of any remains in Rhoose. The nearest community was probably at Nurston on the northern edge of Cardiff airport.
