The Northeast is the place to be in São Paulo for events. Attracting people from all over the world for business and leisure exhibitions — among them the city's Carnival Parade — this previously rural area becomes quite busy if you come at the right time.
A no less important feature of the region are its nature areas, including Cantareira State Park, one of the largest urban forests on the planet. These parks allow for great hiking opportunities and wildlife scenery you wouldn't think was even available in such an urbanized city. You also get pockets of great food, nightlife and peaceful neighborhoods in between all the hustle.
The Northeast is divided into 11 districts, grouped in 4 subprefectures:

Understand

The occupation of the Northeast started with rural properties owned by wealthy farm families such as the Baruels, which left some of their legacy buildings preserved among the skyscrapers. The region later evolved into residential neighborhoods, and ever since the 19th century, the main link of the region with Downtown is the Bandeiras Bridge, connecting the center of the city to the district of Santana, where most of the 1.35 million people in the region call home.
Santana is the true "event arena" of São Paulo, being home to Anhembi Park, a 400,000-m² area for all kinds of events, among other venues. Popular celebrations and manifestations take place at the Campo de Bagatelle and Heróis da FEB squares. Besides, Santana contains the wealthiest residential areas of the region, plus most (or almost all) of the Northeast's gastronomy and nightlife.
But there are of course reasons to go beyond Santana. These include historical constructions from the region's rural period, the various Carnaval groups, and the largest park contained in the São Paulo metropolitan area, the Cantareira State Park, composed of millions of square meters of preserved Atlantic rainforest, and offering some breathtaking views of the city.
Get in

A visitor that goes to the Northeast will probably stay most of the time in the district of Santana (where most attractions, as well as most metro stations, are), so going around should be easy, either on foot or by public transport. The north part of the region (where Cantareira and the Forest Gardens are) is extremely hilly, so going to it on foot or by bicycle is not as easy as it may seem on the map.
By public transport
[edit | edit source]The Northeast isn't well-covered by the rail network, with all metro stations located in the districts of Santana and Tucuruvi, all covered solely by Line 1 (Blue), which also passes through Downtown and South Central. For all other areas, taking a bus is required. In many events that happen in the Northeast, there is a number of dedicated buses going from the Tietê station to these events, so reaching them using public transport shouldn't be a problem. Metro stations 1 Santana. and 2 Tucuruvi. are convenient bus terminals, taking you nearly everywhere in the rest of the region.
By car
[edit | edit source]The Marginal Tietê, that runs on the shores of the Tietê river, links the Northeast to the West and the East of the city, and Corredor Norte-Sul links it to the Center. A car is probably the best way to reach Cantareira. Large events might make traffic close to them difficult.
If using a hailing app to or from the subway, the Jardim São Paulo station often gets you cheaper prices than using the Santana or Tucuruvi stations as one of your stops. They're just one or two stations after Jardim São Paulo, so little time is wasted.

Important landmarks in São Paulo's history can be found in this region, showcasing more recent events compared to the earlier days of the city seen closer to Downtown.
- 1 Baruel Palace (Palacete Baruel), R. Estefânia Mendes Pereira. This small Norman-style castle, built in 1879, belonged to the farm of the Baruel family, one of the first families that settled in the region. It now houses a clinic.
- 2 Campo de Bagatelle Square, Santana (south part of the North-South Corridor). Square used for many events, including Labor Day celebrations, plus celebrations of association football victories. It also contains the 14-Bis monument, a replica of the aircraft constructed by the Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1906.
- 3 Heróis da FEB Square, Santana (north part of the North-South Corridor). Linked to Campo de Bagatelle Square by a 1km stretch, this one contains a monument for the Brazilians who fought in World War II.

- 5 São Paulo Archeology Center (Sítio Morrinhos), R. Santo Anselmo, 102, ☏ +55 11 2236-6121, museudacidade@prefeitura.sp.gov.br. Temporarily closed for reforms. A rural property built in 1702, it was used by the Baruel family as the center of one of their farms. Free.
- 6 São Paulo Forest Gardens (Horto Florestal, Albert Löfgren State Park), R. do Horto, 931, ☏ +55 11 2231-8555, faleconosco@urbiaparques.com.br. daily 05:30-18:00. Just next to Cantareira State Park, this 1.7 million-m² (350,000 available for visits) park is preferable for those who want less adventure and more relaxation, with picnic gardens at the lake and food stands around the main streets. The governor's summer palace and the Forest Museum are located inside the park. Free.
- 7 Youth Park (Parque da Juventude), Av. Zaki Narchi, 1309 (near Carandiru station), ☏ +55 11 2089-8600. daily 06:00-18:00. The 240,000-m² park is the former location of the Carandiru penitentiary complex, which in 1992 was the site of a massacre where over a hundred inmates were killed by the police during a riot. Most of the former penitentiary was destroyed, with the exception of one building (which became a technical school) and minor structure that can be visited. The park gave new life to the location, with its sport facilities (including free sport classes) and the public São Paulo Library, one of the best in the planet according to the International Excellence Awards 2018 in London, with over 46 thousand items from books, DVDs and CDs to video games and tabletop games. Every once in a while, a circus sets up at the park.
Do

Not only does the Northeast offer busy events full of people, but also tranquil forests to hike and a variety of clubs and activities to take part in. Besides the various Carnaval groups, the region offers, through the Campo de Marte airport, activities for those interested in aircraft and aviation.
Sports and hobbies

With 80 million m² of Atlantic rainforest, this park is part of Serra da Cantareira, one of the largest urban forests in the world, extending to 4 municipalities of São Paulo's metropolitan region. It contains over 600 species of flora and over 800 species of fauna. The park is mostly intended for exploring the rainforest in well-defined trails, and has only a few recreation areas; bringing your own food and water is highly advised. The park also does not open on rainy days. Two gates are located in São Paulo. R$60.
- 2 Engordador Nucleus, Estrada Particular da Pedreira, 240. Contains historical buildings and machinery showing São Paulo's first water systems on exhibition. Three trails of varying length and difficulty are available from here: the Macuco trail (650m, 45min, easy), the Cachoeira trail (3000m, 1hr30min, medium) and a mountain bike trail (4000m, 1hr30min, medium).
- 3 Pedra Grande Nucleus, R. do Horto, 931. After walking through one of its three trails, you'll be met by the "big rock" that names this nucleus, giving you a panoramic view of the city. You can choose to go through the Bugio trail (330m, 15min, easy), the Bica trail (1500m, 40min, easy) and the Figueiras trail (1200m, 1hr, medium).

Founded by Italian immigrants, the sports club is famous for its rowing activities, which was originally practiced in the Tietê river, now inside the University of São Paulo. Carnaval schools

The Carnaval event features different schools competing for the best-looking, most technically impressive parades. You can visit many of them and see them training their future performances live, many months before the February festivities.

Events centers

- 13 Anhembi District (Distrito Anhembi), Av. Olavo Fontoura, 1209, ☏ +55 11 5067-1670. With 400,000 m², this venue hosts the largest events of São Paulo and is one of the main landmarks of the region. The area contains various facilities, including its exposition pavillion — where large-scale expositions take place — and the Sambódromo, the venue of the Carnaval parade. The Holiday Inn Anhembi hotel is also here.

- 15 Mart Center, R. Chico Pontes, 1512. A former shopping mall, now basically used for infrequent events, mainly small music concerts. Also works as a parking lot. About 71,000 square meters.

While there's always something around the corner, you can expect the following to happen consistently, yearly or every two years.
- , Anhembi District. February. The main draw of its purpose-built venue, and one of the main forces of tourism in the country. See the São Paulo main article for more information.
- March for Jesus (Marcha para Jesus), Heróis da FEB Sq. March-June. The annual event organized by the Reborn in Christ Church attracts about 5 million people, being one of the largest evangelical events in the world. Features many performances of gospel music. Attracts around 2 million visitors.
- Anime Friends, Anhembi District. June-July. The largest event of Japanese anime and manga in Latin America. Always features performances of J-Pop artists, merchandise, Japanese food and cosplay contests.
- International Book Biennial of São Paulo (Bienal do Livro de São Paulo), Anhembi District. August-September, every two years. The stage for big publishers, bookstores and distributors in the country to showcase new releases, alongside deals on their collections. Attracts more than 700,000 people.
- Brasil Game Show, Anhembi District. October. Large video game event with previews of new releases, video game music concerts, free merchandise and activities. Attracts around 300,000 visitors.
- São Paulo International Motor Show (Salão do Automóvel de São Paulo), Anhembi District. October-November, every two years. The most important automobile event in Latin America, showcasing hundreds of models and attracting more than 700,000 visitors.
Buy
[edit | edit source]As with the rest of São Paulo, your shopping is either in enclosed malls or busy pockets of stores along a couple streets. Tucuruvi has a convenient (but unremarkable) mall attached to its metro station, often with the cheapest movie tickets in the region.
- 1 Metrô Santana area. The area around the Santana bus terminal, particularly the streets Voluntários da Pátria, Dr. César e Alfredo Pujol, is the most expressive outdoor commercial center of the region. Here you can get cheap clothing, accessories, some nice places to sit down and have a drink, and a couple of pleasant streets to walk among the locals.
- 2 Partage Santana, R. Conselheiro Moreira de Barros, 2780, ☏ +55 11 94595-8270. Mon-Sat 10:00-22:00; Sun 14:00-20:00. Shopping mall with more upscale profile. It is actually located in the district of Mandaqui and not Santana. Also known for its "environmental-friendly" policies. About 180 shops.
- 3 Shopping Center Norte, Travessa Casalbuono, 120 (direct buses from Santana station), ☏ +55 11 2224-5959. Mon-Sat 10:00-22:00; Sun 14:00-20:00. The oldest and largest shopping mall of the region, with 300,000 square meters and about 475 shops. Unlike most shopping malls in São Paulo, Center Norte is almost completely horizontal, with only the video game arcade and some of the parking lot outside the ground floor. A unit of the Fogo de Chão chain is in the parking area, a great option to try some Brazilian barbecue.

Av. Braz Leme and Av. Engenheiro Caetano Álvares both have a strong concentration of restaurants and bars, making them good places to have a walk, enjoy the scenery and check what's available.

Bakeries (padarias) are very common in the region, where people order bread, confectionery, cold cuts and sometimes meals, all fresh. They usually act as convenience stores as well. Stop by one of those to buy your picnic for a park visit, straight out of the oven.

The Northwest has plenty of places to drink and party, alongside more laidback bar areas for those looking to wind down. Places such as Av. Brás Leme, Av. Engenheiro Caetano Álvares, Av. Luiz Dumont Villares and R. Dr. César all have many bars lined up to explore on foot, meanwhile the Alto de Santana neighborhood has options scattered all throughout its streets.

Expect to pay more if an event is coming up, but you won't usually be without a room as lodging options are plentiful. The region around the Tietê bus terminal has some cheap options, but it's a dodgy area, so pay attention even if it's daytime.

[edit | edit source]The Northeast is pretty much average in terms of criminality, so use the recommendations that apply to the rest of São Paulo. There are, however, some dangerous areas, especially in poor neighborhoods in parts of the region close to neighboring cities.
The streets in Santana and Vila Guilherme close to the Tietê station aren't particularly safe when they become deserted, especially during the night. So, when walking to (or back from) an event in the area, try to follow other people walking from (or to) the metro station. This shouldn't be a problem in large scale events. If this is not possible, taking a bus or a taxi to the metro station may be a good idea. Av. Cruzeiro do Sul has a lot of homeless people living below the railway, and while most are inoffensive, petty crime is more common in that area, especially surrounding streets. Robberies are also reported in Youth Park late at night, so visit it during the day.
