Saltburn-by-the-Sea
Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a seaside town in North Yorkshire, 12 miles east of Middlesbrough. It was a tiny fishing village until the 1860s when ironstone mining got started, and it was laid out as a resort and mineworkers' village on a grid pattern. The population in 2021 was 5900.
Redcar 5 miles east was a steel-making town, but the industry collapsed and the steelworks are a sad brownfield site. It's nowadays a commuter town with a population of 37,600.
Get in
[edit]By road follow A19 towards Middlesbrough, then A174 east. The coastal route A171 from Scarborough is attractive in all weathers except fog.
By train you usually change at Middlesbrough, which has direct services from Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne and York. Trains run every 30 min from Middlesbrough to Saltburn, taking 25 min via Redcar; they may start from Darlington or Bishop Auckland.
1 Saltburn Station is central in town. It has ticket machines, but no waiting room or toilets. There is step-free access to the platforms.
Arriva North East Bus X4 runs from Middlesbrough every 30 min, taking 50 min via Redcar, and continues to Loftus and Whitby.
X3 runs hourly from Middlesbrough and continues to Skelton and Lingdale.
Buses make several stops through town including the railway station.

- Saltburn Pier is 681 ft / 208 m, half its original length through storms and accidents.
- Saltburn Cliff Tramway is a funicular between Marine Parade and the pier entrance, running Mar-Oct daily 10:30AM-6PM. Installed in 1884, it's powered by water fed into a tank on the upper car, until it outweighs and hauls up the lower car. Adult ride £2.
- Valley Gardens follow the course of Skelton Beck from the beach near the pier upstream to an imposing railway viaduct.
- Teddy's Nook is a villa on Marine Parade opposite Spa Hotel that sometimes lets rooms. It was built in 1862 for Henry Pease, the entrepreneur who established the town. There's a bogus legend that Edward Prince of Wales had an affair here with the actress Lily Langtry. Not a shred of evidence for this, or that they ever had an affair or visited town, although both would study Redcar's racing results with interest.
- Emmanuel Church (Anglican) is on Windsor Rd 200 yards southwest of the railway station. It was built 1867-69.
- Our Lady of Lourdes Church (RC) is more modest, built in redbrick in 1928. It's on Milton St 100 yards east of the station.

- 1 Charm Bracelet is a 2 m sculpture along the coastal Cleveland Way. The original of 1990 was vandalised and replaced by a sturdier version in 1996.

Drink
[edit]
- The Ship Inn for 120 years was the only local public house, because it stood east of the stream and therefore in the parish of Brotton, beyond the jurisdiction of Saltburn's teetotal Quakers. (Though visitors could drink in hotel and private clubs, which excluded the riff-raff.) It's now a Greene King pub open daily 10:30AM-10:30PM.
- Others sprang up since 1982 when national licensing rules were relaxed, and now include Guns Bar, The Pillar Box, Alexandra Vaults, The Marine and The Victoria.
