San Gerardo de Rivas is a small mountain village in the district of Rivas, in the canton of Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. At about 1,520 m (5,000 ft) it is the trailhead for the climb of Cerro Chirripó, the highest mountain in the country (3,820 m), and the base for hot springs, cloud-forest reserves and birdwatching in the upper valley of the Chirripó Pacífico river.
Understand
[edit | edit source]San Gerardo de Rivas is a quiet farming community in the upper valley, around 20 km northeast of San Isidro de El General. Chirripó National Park was created in 1975, and since then the village has served as the "front door" to the mountain: most visitors are climbers who spend the night before (and often after) the hike here.
The "San Gerardo" area is spread over several small settlements along the road: San Gerardo itself, Canaán, Herradura and Chimirol. Nights are cool all year, it often rains in the afternoon when the valley below is dry, and clouds close the views after midday. Mornings are best for everything, including the drive.
Climate: the dry season (December to April) has the clearest skies, especially February and March. The rainy season runs roughly May to November.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By car
[edit | edit source]From San Isidro de El General, take the mountain road northeast for about 20 km (roughly one hour), passing Canaán and Herradura. The road climbs the entire way, from coffee farms through pasture into cloud forest. In the rainy season a high-clearance vehicle is worthwhile; in the dry season an ordinary car can manage the main road.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Local buses run daily from San Isidro de El General to San Gerardo de Rivas. From San José, take a direct bus to San Isidro (about 3 hours) and change there. Taxis and private transfers are also available from San Isidro.
Get around
[edit | edit source]The village is small and most lodging is within a few kilometres of the park's ranger station (MINAE/SINAC office). Walking is practical for the central area; the hot springs and some lodges require a short drive or hike.
