San Isidro

San Isidro is a town in Nueva Ecija. Formerly the provincial capital, it has been overshadowed by neighboring Gapan to the east and is largely a quiet agrarian town.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

Situated at the confluence of the Peñaranda and Pampanga Rivers, San Isidro was originally part of Pampanga until 1846, when it was transferred to Nueva Ecija province. The town served as the provincial capital from 1852 to 1912. It was also where the Philippine Revolution first broke out in Nueva Ecija in 1896, when Katipunero forces under General Mariano Llanera besieged the town. During the Philippine-American War, the town became the capital of the First Philippine Republic led by president Emilio Aguinaldo for a few months in 1899 before falling to American forces.

In 1912, San Isidro lost its status as provincial capital to Cabanatuan, turning the town into a typical agrarian municipality. Since the 21st century, there has been economic diversification brought about by its proximity to Gapan, the economic hub of southern Nueva Ecija and a former suburb of San Isidro.

It is home to about 55,000 people (census, 1 July 2024) "edit wikidata"
